Does knife weight matter to you?

Are you the kind of guy to count ounces up to four significant figures or nah? :D

Personally, I’m not THAT nitpicky about knife weight unless the knife gets obnoxiously heavy for its application. Let’s start with folders. I can appreciate the engineering feat of, say, a 3.5” blade that weighs just under 3 ounces. I think that’s especially great for smart casual or more formal clothes where the Espada XL just won’t cut it. Nonetheless, I also have 4” and 5.5” blades that weigh between 5 to 8 ounces. Love ‘em just the same. I’d probably start being bothered north of 10-12 ounces.

For an 11” fixed blade, personal preference is sub-25 ounces. I can lug that bad boy all day no problem.

TL;DR, do you have a preferred range of knife weight?

If it’s something that I’m going to pocket carry then around 4.5oz - 5oz or so is my limit. If it’s gonna be on my belt then I don’t really have a limit just so long as the knife/sheath combo feels “right”.
Good point. A good sheath system that fits the user well can go a long way in reducing “felt weight” hehe.

Weight is very important to me, as is bulk. I don't like a large or heavy pocket knife. I already have stuff in my pockets that are more important to make room for like cell phone, concealed gun, key ring, wallet. I like a pocket knife thats no more that a few ounces and small enough to drop in a pocket and forget about until I need to open a package. A Victoriox executive is my favorite pocket knife for the past few years. I find two inches of blade is enough for my suburban life. It fits in the coin pocket of jeans and leaves room in the right hand pocket for the concealed carry.

No more than 2 ounces or so, and maybe 3 inches closed length.

I hear people complain about the weight of the Buck 110. I’ve carried one daily for almost 40 years now. I find the weight to be an asset. It makes a good smasher when and if it’s needed. Also a good striking weapon if needed. The weight of a 110 is unnoticeable on my belt.

No. I carried a 110 a lot over the years and the only size reason I've gone to the 112 is the Length.. it rides on my belt better for me when I'm driving. I put the Small Sebby in my pocket and the the Umnumzaan the next day and no problem there.

It depends on what you get in exchange for the weight. Utility isn’t weightless and sometimes it worth carrying a couple of ounces (or a couple of pounds) on you.

Yes, I agree.
If I'm doing a construction project, I don't mind the extra weight of my Wave or Super Tool as it will probably save me many trips back to the tool bag.
But if I'm working at the hospital, a Victorinox Money Clip or Sportsman does just fine.
If me and my beautiful bride are just going for an after dinner walk, my Spyderco Delica or Endura feels just right.
If I'm hanging with some friends around the bonfire, It's time to have my favorite Buck 110 on my belt.

Typically no. My folders range from 2oz to just over 9oz with my edc being just over 6oz. That being said I don’t normally carry my Tatanka while I’m wearing drawstring gym shorts.

I agree with most of you. I have had big, heavy 7 oz titanium framelocks that disappeared in your pocket and just carried so well. On the other hand sub 3 oz “light weight” knives that seemed you needed a wheelbarrow to carry them. It’s all I the design for me.

Well, I don't really care since I associate weight with quality, however, when it came to Drop Forged Hunter I used for EDC, I would often feel it pull my pocket down, Boker GoBag was other opposite, it was very light, even too light. After it broke I was even disappointed to see they drilled already small tang without a good reason, and that hole was also where the crack happened.

Belt no matter; I carry a Swisstool most of the time for work.
For fixed blades, I don't want to feel like I'm carrying a kitchen knife. Then again, no boat anchors pulling down my pants.
Pocket, yes lighter the better. Ti is preferred.

Size, Weight, Length, and most important of all USE or most common applications of use.... All these factors influence whether I am willing to carry a certain knife and how I will carry the knife. So, the answer is IT ALL DEPENDS.

How you routinely dress also factors into in to it.

It depends on the knife, and how it's carried. I've carried a few different 8 oz modern folders clipped in my rfp, and don't give that a second thought. Drop an 8 oz knife, loose, in my pocket; and I notice. My Buck 112 is probably at the upper limit of what I will carry loose, and I prefer lighter. Fixed blade on my belt? I suppose it would matter if I was doing a long hike; but nothing I've been comfortable strapping on for my day to day has been an issue, weight-wise.
