Does size matter?

I personally, would be real tempted to spend the extra $150 and go deep. The 18" will do 99% of the anything I ever plan to do. Actually you could do a 19" alloy blade in it by going diagonal, its 20.5" corner to corner. Figure a good 1/2" of foil on each end of a covered blade and some room to keep you out of the coils. But, if you ever wanted to do a short sword the 27" would be sweet. I can't think of a down side except some space and a bit more for electricity to heat it up. Once its up to temp and cycling the large oven wouldn't use much more to keep its temp. Who doesn't think about a sword.:D

I have a 24" kiln and like Jim said 90+% of my blades are under 18" but it is nice to have the extra length sometimes.

Yeah. Id like the etxtra room just for that rare project that would need it but just wanted to make sure no real downside to bigger that Im not thinking of.

The guys that say size doesn't matter usually have small ovens.:D The only thing to watch out for on larger ovens is the thermocouple is usually in the front by the door. There can be a serious difference in temp from front to back. I would like to hear if anyone has a method to solve this issue. We have a Lucifer industrial oven at work that has a thermocouple in front and back, with 2 separate coils. One this size is way to expensive and impractical for knifemakers.

I believe the thermocouple is centered on most commercial knife ovens, regardless of size.
