Hi
I just got my CF streach from knifeworks. I also got a benchmade 710.

Great spyderco by he way.

I noticed that the 710 has bushings and that the streach does not. How come?

Excuse my ignorance (plenty of it)

Is it that lock backs dont need them?

I looked but cant see them. Also looked through the holes for the clip. there doesnt seem to be any.

try to use a flash light , and different positions of the view, you should spot them eventualy...
but does it feel in the opening/closing like it doesnt have bushings, it aint smooth ?
maybe they are very thin, or somewhat inside the handle scales...
i dont know exactly how you can see them, but i am sure it has bushings, like any good folder, especialy made by spyderco
maybe Sal can clue you in on this one

The knife is actually very very smooth. I was just wondering because the 710 has big bright bushings .They seem to be brass or something. I also know that the sebenza has them. I looked through the holes for tip down carry and I can see the blade moving up and down. I thought if it has them, I wouldn't be able to see the blade unless they are tiny in diameter and are made inside the handle.

Thanks

it aint brass is phosphorus bronze :D
if its smooth dont worry about it..maybe they are tiny like you said
anyway when Sal comes in the forums i guess he will clarify that

IIRC, Sal told that they didn't put bushings in their Stretch II, Caly III, and some other high-end knives (Kris, Persian?)

He told us that it was better, but I don't remember for what reason. He also said that it was harder to get well behaving knives this way than by putting PB washers, but that the result was worth it.

can't find the thread where he said so, though.

IIRC, Sal said they've managed to polish the liners and knife around the pivot to such an extent that washers are not required anymore. (less is more!)

Spyderco uses phosphorous bronze bushings in some of their models, even at the older ones (like the Shabaria and I'm pretty sure the Military). I know the Adventura has them (I dismantled a few knives a couple times and those tiny discs were there ;)).
I'm not sure about the Stretch though...

From what I understand, bushings and washers are two different things. As has been mentioned, the Stretch II has no pivot washers. However, it does have what some would term a self-bushed pivot. The "female" half of the pivot screw serves as a bushing.

thanks for the clarification, sounds like we were quite a bit not to know that.

Just to add to what Deacon said:

AFAIK there is only one knife on the market that uses bushings and that is the Sebenza (well the Mnandi might as well, don't know). All other manufacturers use washers or on the FRN models a raised portion that serves as washer. Don't know about the Stretch, the CF-Military uses very thin PB washers. They are hard to see.
