Does stacked Micarta look ok?

I am doing a heavy chopper and wanted a sculpted handle. The thickest Micarta I have is 3/8". Can I layer the Micarta to get 5/8"for 3/4" slabs and have it look ok? Or will that seam look like garbage?

I don't want to waist the material and figured someone else had to try this.

You could always stick something in between the layers and make it a "design feature" rather than a flaw.

Also if you die the epoxy the same color as your handle material it'll be less noticeable.

I was using clear stuff from pops and green canvas. I can't think of a way to stack where it looks cool.

I've seen it stacked in squares, so that the end grain is showing. Can look pretty good. Or throw some brass or other liner in between the layers, like McPherson said.

I think you would be better off going with a different color under your green canvas micarta like black g10 or maybe brown canvas. I have never layered the same color on top of each other though.

I agree, use a 1/4" liner piece of contrasting color (black?) Micarta, and your 3/8" Micarta slabs on top. I recommend Corby bolts for the assembly. Plan the bolt positions with your sculpting in mind. Dye the epoxy black.

I can't imagine any need for 3/4" thick slabs, as that would end up with a handle over 1.5" thick counting the tang.

I can give it a try with a fiber pinstripe. I just wanted the thickness for a thick sculpted butt. I might use black and natural

This is pops green micarta with a red fiber liner and some .125 natural micarta. The slabs were way too thick for my corby bolts so I had to thin them down a bit before glue up.

I'm putting them on this. I'm going with black canvas and with red followed by the tan

What's wrong with it? Is the red a fiber liner?
Yeah it is. I also tried to fudge the length and after I got the contours ground it the scales were short. I also kept hiting the red liner and had to grind under it. It's a good practice run I guess. I did get to do some test chopping at least.

I like it too. I'd be a bit concerned about the having that much of the red fiber between the micarta exposed, but if you are keeping it, it would be a good test.
If the handle fails, you get a free handle replacement lesson.
