Does the Delica need a choil?

I have been thinking about getting a Delica for a while now but still haven't pulled the trigger. My question is do you guys think the Delica needs a choil? It seems that everyone already loves the ergonomics of it in hand, but with the commitment to constantly improving things, I would have to assume that the Delica 5 will have a choil. I'll still probably get the Delica 4 but I was interested to hear what people who have actually used it think.

No. If you want a choil, get a Native. Not every design should have a choil. I do wish there were a more elegant way of concealing the part of the blade where the jimping ends (the part that meets the back lock) when the knife is closed, though.

I think if you want the Delica4 to have a choil you should be looking at a Caly3 or 3.5. I like the Delica4 how it is, despite my preference for a finger choil. Additionally, I find the blade tang and handle relationship while open to provide enough of a makeshift choil as-is for the design.

Or a Native...that's a good point (No pun intended).

NO! It has a finger guard to keep your fingers from sliding onto the blade (and this can happen with a choil). You can actually choke up on the blade where the choil would be, if you feel it is necessary. This was a good selling point for me, that it had no choil. I love this knife and cannot wait for the blue G10 to be released sometime down the road. Blue Nishijin would be awesome, too, if anyone is listening.

After handling a meadowlark 2 I've found the choil to be quite useful on a Delica sized knife. So much so that I too found myself wishing for the platform with better steel. Ultimately, I understand why it's not there on the Endura/Delica and as other users have posted there is a nifty place on both to use as a makeshift choil.

That said, I still reach for my Spydercos with choil more often than not.

I'm ambivalent about the idea of a choil on the Delica. That said, what's been said about the other models available with choils is true. Need a choil? Try a Caly 3 or Native.

Now, a wire clip on the Delica? Or even the option for either the wire clip of standard clip? Yea, that's an improvement that I would jump all over.

The Delica doesn't NEED a finger choil, but IMO it would be a better knife if it had one. The Delica 4 is a very good knife but there is a little room for improvement. How about a finger choil and a 0.2" shorter handle? How about an interchangeable standard metal clip / low rider wire clip option?

No choil, it's already been said, but get a caly if you want a choil. There has been a few threads on this subject as well. The majority of us don't want it.

Hey here's an idea, how about instead of debating whether the D4 should have a choil, how about we lobby for a FRN version of the Caly 3.5? How do you think that would go over with Sal?

Yeah, I use the tang area of the Delica as a finger choil also. Byrd MLark is a good example of how a choiled Delica would be like. I'm fine either way but I must say that I do utilize it for max control.

 The Spyderco R2 is sort of a cross between the Delica and the Endura, and it has a choil. Or you can try the Byrd line, some of those models have a choil that fall into the size range.

Hi Fodinski,

Welcome to our forum.

The Delica is designed for the general market. The handle on the Delica is longer than need just to cover the blade of a 3" blade. This permits full hand grip. Most of those in the "general" market prefer no choil. They don't want to get that close to the sharp edge. Most on the forums are knife afi's and want more control over the edge.

As Speedseeker mentioned, we have thought about an FRN Caly 3 or 3.5, but we don't know if the market is large enough to support the tooling costs.

This goes to show how many knives there are to fulfill this need of a choil.

There are also the Chaparral and Sage 4 to consider if you're stuck somewhere with a 3" blade limit, and the Stretch, if superior ergonomics and a 50/50 choil are more important to you than blade shape.

^This is why I love this company. They listen, evaluate and then decide. It's about the product...it's the quality of their product that drives success. Pass the kudos to your folks Sal.

I would like to see wire clip options on many models.
