Does the Raven line have liners?

Does the Raven line of Emerson knives have liners or are they solid Kydron? Thanks for the help.

Yes. They use full nestled liners as Mr. Sal Glesser terms it. Although the handle shape is very well designed, its materials, krydon and liners are much left to be desired. Simply open the blade on any one and use your fingers to squeeze the handles hard towards each other. They will literally make contact!! I must be missing something about their companys design philosopy.

I'm so glad to see someone comment on the Raven. I recently handled one, and to be fair I've ONLY handled one, but I was pretty disappointed. It was very lightweight, but the scales were flexible and the blade had play when open and closed. When it was closed it moved enough to hit the scales. It's a small thing, but the opening disk wasn't near the center of the cut-out in the handle, which made it hard to access. I don't mean this as a flame, I was just very surprised that there were so many noticeable deficencies in the knife, especially for the price.

Are you guys commenting on the newer production Raven's. I have a older one and it doesn't do the things that you say. No rubbing, centered disc, & the sides don't move when squeezed. Maybe this is a problem with the newer ones.

I agree with David...my Raven is dated "97", and has none of the problems the others mentioned. My other Raven did have some play in the blade, but simply tightening the pivot screw fixed that. It will probably come loose again with use, but it's not my 'problem' anymore. The one I kept is the perfect example of what I have come to expect from Emerson. My Commander, CQC-7, Raven and Specwar--until I sold it--are all excellent knives, with no problems. Liner locks line up perfectly with the center of the blade, minimal-to-no blade play, tight scales and clips, and centered thumb discs. I can see where the Raven COULD have problems with the scales, as Kydron is somewhat more flexible than G-10, but it is also much lighter in weight. When I'm wearing a suit or dress pants at work, and I carry my Commander, the pants tend to get tugged downward by the weight of the knife. Not so with the Raven. Just my opinions...

Tatonka: the reason for the Ravens disc not being "centered" in the finger groove is due to need for clearance when the blade is opening in its arc motion. If it was "centered" then the disc would likely hang up on the leading tip of the scales.

Quite a few factory Emersons have passed thru my hands and IME ALL of the Ravens and CQC series have had at least a small amount of liner rub. Simply take the entire folded unit and bend lengthwise in either direction and the blade will eventually "center"!! Works the same for the Benchmade AFCKs. Also, the pivot screws eventually need retightening just from opening and closing. Something that should be preset at the factory IMO. The CQC series however have quite stiff scales and do not flex like the Ravens. The ones I' ve handled are from 98 and 99. Don' t know about any earlier ones. Seems strange that the earlier ones had no such problems and the later ones do!

The only exceptions are the Commanders. The scales are very stiff; action is smooth; none of the pivot screws worked loose; and blade rub was only ever so slight. Most notable only when a quick opening, and thus extra downward thumb pressure, is needed.

Can' t comment on the Spec Wars.

I' d like to add that the handle flex problems of the current Ravens may be due in part to the placement of the rear spacer. If it was placed or extended towards the mid area, any handle flex might be minimalized.

I have had a Raven since March 99 and It is perfect

It is a 99 dated model and it has no blade play problems, nor do the grips squeeze together. I have 4 production Emersons, and I have NEVER had problems with any of them
