Does the Shallot have a safety...

Anybody know why the Shallot doesnt have a thumb bob?
I'm kinda thinking about adding one, maybe something cool with a birthstone insert.
Better yet, has anyone done that - I would love to see the results.

No thumb stud on the Shallot. It's modeled after Ken's Dead Sexy, which didn't have one. I guess you could drill and press one in...I'd check with Steve (STR's Backyard Knifeworks here at BF) to see if it's feasible.

I dont want a safety on a Shallot.

Heck, I even tighten my Leek saftey down so it's effectivly non-working.

thaks for pointing me in the right direction spx.
I will inquire with STR.

Anybody see a down side to putting a thumb stud on one of these bad boys?

Offhand, only one possibly. Ken mentioned that the torsion bar system in the Shallot requires more force (travel) to open than other SpeedSafe models. That said, I don't know if a thumb stud would allow for the extra long travel needed to activate the assist...that is unless you have monkey hands! :D

Still a neat thought...

The Shallot is my first Kershaw and I like it a lot. Bought it after seeing a Leek, loved the action but prefer a slightly bigger knife with a more traditional drop point blade. The Shallot fit the bill nicely. It was a bit of a hassle to source in the UK as no dealers seem to have imported them yet, Leeks and Chives are common enough. The only very minor niggle that I have is mostly self inflicted. I like working the action for no apparent reason.:o After a while I find that unlocking the knife gets a little awkward. For me the lock could do with being just a little bit more pronounced to give fingers/thumb a little more purchase. Still wouldn't swap it though.:D

Welcome to the world of Kershaw, Sam.
You picked a great knife to start off with.

Welcome to the forums!!

Hello Sam, and welcome to the forums!

If you're looking for a dealer that will ship to the UK, might I suggest www.newgraham.com. Mike, Mary Beth and Annie are the best friends a knife lover can find!

As for the Leeks, Chives, and Scallions, I tighten the lock so that it won't engage. The resistance from the torsion bar will keep the blade closed on it's own.

Just received my "First" Shallot in the mail yesterday; WOW! Thatsa one sweeeeeta knife! It's everything I hoped/knew it would be, and more. Mr. Onion, and Kershaw hit one out of the park with this design. This thing is like my beloved Leeks, but Supercharged. It's the perfect size for my big mitts, and is still Sheeple Friendly. I can hardly wait for new blade shapes, handle materials,
etc..

Maybe a Random Ti/ZDP189 Shallot. Hmmmm. Yeah, that's the ticket.
