What I would really like is the following hawk (if it exists):
*Sharp edge, rather thin blade profile. More for actual camp use than for breaching/smashing.
*Hammer poll, for use in driving tent stakes, general hammering. A lot of hawks I see have a kind of flat surface rather than a decent, usable sized hammer head.
*Integral construction. Seems like a well made one piece hawk would be nearly indestructable. Wouldn't have to worry about a handle breaking out in the woods if you're clumsy and hit something wrong.
*Preferably some sort of stainless steel. I know, I know, stainless isn't normally favored for hawks/hatchets, but I live in southeast Texas where the humidity is hell, and I don't think a working tool should have to be pampered and checked often for rust and regularly oiled unless it's been in use lately. I'd like something that can be stored away and forgotten if it's not going to be used for awhile.
*Finally, something that won't cause a divorce when it comes time to paying for it.
Thanks for any suggestions.

Well I'd suggest Bear Mountain Tomahawks - probably the Light Infantry or the Rainier/Rainier Scout.

A one piece hawk is usually flat stock so hammer polls aren't usually an option.

Wood handles & synthetic handles can both break but you can replace a wood handle where with a synthetic handle you have to have the manufacturer replace the whole hawk.

Flat stock hawks also tend to be hard on the hands because there's nothing to absorb the shock.

As for the rust issue - we use something called Weatherpruf on our hawk heads. We live in the Puget Sound on Anderson Island and we never have rust on any of the hawks. It's a spray on coat that wipes off easily but really does a good job of protecting.

Thanks for the info. As far as a flat handle not absorbing shock, you could always have handle scales or para cord wrap. The Rainier looks closer to what I'm thinking of, but even it has a hammer poll that barely sticks out from the head. Almost even with the handle. I know there are a lot of good coatings to help prevent rust, but as long as I'm dreaming, I'm dreaming of stainless!

Actually, the Ranger Entry Tool is kind of along the lines of what I'm looking for. Just doesn't have much of a hammer head.

Contact Justin Gingrich, the owner/maker of Ranger and he can probably accomodate your needs. Heck, design one and he will make it for you.

I'll give him a call! Also, the K5 also looks great. Not stainless, and very expensive, but the type design I'm looking for.

i saw a cheap integral handle hatchet in a catalogue, but it had some kind of metal attached to the back of the head, so that it made a wide hammer poll that could be used for hammering (gasp!). it was thin metal, relatively, so the hammer poll was out unless they put those other peices of metal on. they only went a couple of inches towards the head, but i wonder how they are held on...and i wonder if they would interfere with normal use, like beating through a log with a baton.

i wonder if this could be done effectively on a stock tomahawk, to make a useful wide hammer poll.

The thing is that if you want a hammer poll then having a spike isn't going to do you a bit of good and the flat stock is too thin to be an effective hammer unless you're using the side of the eye.
