i need a quality edc light for ems work.

criteria:

-sub 5" length.
-led
-loooong run times.
-low range lumen output (less than 100)
-single AAA or AA
-waterproof/submersible
-prefer on/off without cycling through modes

i see a lot of great lights that check most of those boxes, but most of them are too bright for my applications, and as a result have crappy run times. i'd love a 50lm light that will last 3-5 hrs on a battery. am i dreaming?

Why not an adjustable head lamp? Will leave both hands free. Look at the Black Diamond Spot 2016. Waterproof. Anywhere from 4 to 200 lumens. 200 hour battery life on lowest setting. Gives you a strobe and red lamp also. Though it uses three AAA batteries it only weights 3.2 oz with batteries. REI has them now for just under 30 bucks --- an incredibly good buy. For working with hands, a headlamp really is the best option.

Check out the Olight S15. A claimed 4 hour run time at 70 lumens might be as close to your specs that you can find.

headlamps are great, and i have a few already that i could press into service. thanks for the suggestion.

the downside of headlamps is that they don't carry very well in a pocket. i prefer a flashlight for edc.

You are describing the Coast g19
AAA, 50lum, 2.5h, single output

Not waterproof. The streamlight microstream is but only 24lum.

I agree the handsfree of a headlamp and multiple run levels are good features to have.

Don't you have a back for EMS work?

we have lights on our truck, i have a light attached to my bunker coat and one on my helmet, and we have disposable penlights in the kit bags.

through trial and error, i've found that i like to have a small light in my pocket for most tasks.

Check out the o-light T-15 clicky. AA bat., 3 outputs, remembers previous setting, 72 hrs. on low.

Klarus FL1A
Has modes, but has memory (returns to last used mode)
High is 65 lumens, posted run time is 2.5 hrs

If you're willing to go just a touch bigger, check out the Energizer Eveready Industrial Economy 2 AA LED flashlight
30 lumens, for ~ 40 hrs
I can't comment on the quality, but on paper it seems to hit the mark

I like my ThruNite Neutron 2A, and it might fit your needs. You have the option of using it with either 1 or 2 AA's by screwing on the extender tube. I have not seen another light in this class that can get so many lumens out of a AA on turbo- 460 with one, or 750 with 2. But it has several intermediate options for normal use, and has a memory function- 70 Lumens for 3 hours, or 11 for 72 hours (with one battery). Not quite your 50 lumens for 4 hours, but close, and you can make use of the lower levels or add another battery to extend the run time. Also has a regular high setting and moonlight mode. I generally leave mine on the 70 lumen setting, and a quick double click bumps it up to turbo at any time.

For a single mode pen light, how about the Terralux Light Stars 80? It is 80 lumens (high cri) that runs for 5 hours.

Edit: Sorry, I just realized it does not meet your length requirements.

 I picked up a S15r and really like it. I usually leave it on the 7 lumen setting until I need more.

I have a half dozen or so Streamlight ProTac1AAA. Love this light! The tail cap button is 3/16" tall so you'll never have a hard time pressing it. Perfect size for a L/XL hand. Removeable Pocket clip doubles as a hat brim clip.
I program mine for Low/High. Press once for low, press twice for high. Click either to lock on. I use Lithium's but the Alkaline's last a long time.

Features Ten-Tap® Programming – Choose from three user selectable programs
C4® LED illumination

High: 70 lumens runs 30 minutes (alkaline); 2.25 hours (lithium)

Low: 5 lumens; runs 11 hours (alkaline); 22 hours (lithium)

Uses 1 “AAA” alkaline battery (included)

Also accepts 1 “AAA” lithium battery for extended run time
3.94” (10 cm); 1.3 oz (37 grams

thanks for all of the replies. lots of good suggestions, including some lights that i wasn't even aware of. unfortunately, none really match what i'm looking for in a light.

i think shopping for a flashlight is like shopping for a car, i'll probably spend more than i planned on and sacrifice features i want for ones that i don't need.

my big issue with most lights is that they sacrifice run time for output, and if we're being honest, most lights are many multiples brighter than they need to be for most tasks.
