does this flashlight exist?

Humm, There were a lot of good AA suggestions... Since none met your criteria, and if you can tolerate a CR123 instead, check out the Olight S1. It will run 4 hrs. @80 lumens or 25 hrs. @8 lumens and remembers your last mode choice. It has the added bonus of a neodymium magnet in the tail cap so you can attach it to any magnetic surface while you work.
I work in IT and it's awesome to be able to attach the light to an equipment rack rail and have both hands to work on things.

Did you look at the streamlight microstream?

If you really need more run time the 2xAAA streamlight is only 5.3 inches long and otherwise meets the requirements. 65lum, 6.25h

How much of a deal breaker is 0.3 inches?

I like my Surefire Titan Plus

I think a Surefire outdoorsman is almost a perfect fit. I know it runs on CR123A but that's a better choice than the A's.

Highest setting is still below the threshold. If you run the backwards clip it fits a hat brim like a headlight (or the collar of a stiff jacket).

And you get huge support from them afterwards.

i need a quality edc light for ems work.

criteria:

-sub 5" length.
-led
-loooong run times.
-low range lumen output (less than 100)
-single AAA or AA
-waterproof/submersible
-prefer on/off without cycling through modes

i see a lot of great lights that check most of those boxes, but most of them are too bright for my applications, and as a result have crappy run times. i'd love a 50lm light that will last 3-5 hrs on a battery. am i dreaming?

That sounds pretty close to the Inova X1 that I carry. The old models, like I have, only had a single mode. Looks like the updated version has High and Low power modes.

thanks for all of the replies. lots of good suggestions, including some lights that i wasn't even aware of. unfortunately, none really match what i'm looking for in a light.

i think shopping for a flashlight is like shopping for a car, i'll probably spend more than i planned on and sacrifice features i want for ones that i don't need.

You really aughtta check out this site then: http://flashlights.parametrek.com/
They don't include every flashlight known to man, but it can really help narrow down your choices & show ya stuff you didn't know existed. You can set it to search for lights by battery type & number, lumens, price, runtime etc.

And if you don't already have some, get Sanyo Eneloop rechargeable batteries to power it. Get enough so you always have spares on hand, so you can swap them out & always have a fresh set in the light. Since I got some, I've never had a light/batteries go dead on me when I needed it, because I'm not trying to get that last 10% of juice out of expensive disposables.

I don't EDC the light I mentioned above; AA lights are just too big for my pockets. I settled on a Thrunite Ti3 (single AAA) for daily carry, since it's only as big as my pinkie finger, and it puts out more lumens than the 4 D cell Maglight I carried for 20 years. Maratac has a new model that matches the lumens with twice the run time, and there's also several rechargeable micro lights (that take 10180 Li batteries) that match the performace at half the size.

Thanks for the kind words! I'm glad you like it.

But a little correction, the parametrek site isn't a "they" it is just one person for the whole thing :)

I've been overhauling the flashlights part pretty heavily. My knive database is still in a sad state but it will be getting love next.

Please seriously CONSIDER Malkoff!!! Listen, I will even give you my 20% off coupon.

Check out the Thrunite Archer 1A V3. I don't have it but the specs are interesting. It has 5 modes but has a memory so you can have it come on to your preferred setting. Uses 1 AA battery, is ~4"(110 mm), and is rated for 5 hours at 75 lumens. Probably other manufacturers offer similar lights but this is one I found on a quick search.

I carry a Streamlight Microstream EVERYWHERE I go, in my pocket with my GEC TC Barlow. I use it constantly at work as a paramedic in a busy metro service. I know of at least 5 of the fire guys on my shift carry one on their radio strap attached to the mic loop. Dad carries one every day as a farmer, brother carries one everyday as a mechanic. Single mode, small enough to always be on you, super handy. I'd be lost without one.

the mictrostream is the single most recommended flashlight in the ems/fire world. it seems under powered and run times aren't great, but there has to be something to the hype. everyone who owns one raves about it. might be time for me to take a sip of the koolaid.

I think it's because it just works. Single mode. Off, on, off. Just the right amount of light for tasks for which you'd use a small light. Yeah, they are "cool," and yeah, they aren't going to make anyone gasp with amazement, "you get that much light out of that little thing!?" But, they are REALLY handy lights when you need a light NOW. Plus, they're only $16-20! The anodizing will wear off, but who cares? It's a tool, not a statement. If you want a statement, but a $100+ single AAA light. If you want a sturdy light at a great price, get the Streamlight Microstream.

i agree with everything you said. streamlight makes a good product; i currently use two different streamlight models on my bunker gear (polytac and survivor).

thanks for the recommendation.
