I had this Remington a little while back. I initially bought it because it has the perfect set of tools for me. The only issue was the size. It was just too big for me to carry around without some sort of sheath. I'm in search of a knife with the same tool set, a bail, and a traditional look and feel (bone or wood scales or the like), just in a smaller, more pocket friendly size.

Does anyone know of a manufacturer/model out there that would fit the bill? I can't seem to track one down....

There aren't many scout patterns that are readily available with multiple knife blades. Precious few as a matter of fact. None that I can think of, that have EXACTLY the same tool compliment of your Remington 4343, in a smaller size.

But there are:

The Camillus-manufactured Remington R-4. No longer produced, but easily found on auction. Here is a link to more info on the entire line of saw scouts. They're amazing knives.

Still currently in production is the German Boker Camp Knife.

The Boker USA camp knife is no longer produced, but easy to find on auction.

Camillus also produced a 2-blade scout for Sears, many years ago. Also easy to find on auction.

There is the GEC Texas camp knife but it’s really not any smaller at all it might even be bigger, if you wanted just a scout with a clip point blade maybe you could get one modded, I know it’s not what you’re looking for but something I’ve been thinking about doing or getting done Would be a Victorianox electricians main blade modded into a clip point

Try a SAK (Swiss Army Knife). I've carried a Victorinox Tinker for years; available in two sizes. Most SAKs have red cellidor scales; if you prefer, look at the Alox SAKs. Can never go wrong with a SAK.

Thanks for all the replies! I'm quite familiar with SAKs and I do have an Electrician but I'm really looking for more classic traditional knife.

The R4 has been on my short list as well as some of the other two blade patterns mentioned.

I've also been considering a Cub Scout knife which is pretty close, minus the sheepsfoot. If anyone has thoughts on this one I'd love to hear them.

The Camillus C4 looks really great too. Probably my favorite of rhe suggestions so far. I haven't come across one before and wonder how hars they are to find :/

Any other suggestions welcome!

Or you might look at the Marbles scout/utility knives. Same tools plus a small phillips screwdriver. No bail, but you could always add one.

There are some old military knives from Ulster that are somewhat similar. The Victorinox Electrician would have been my recommendation also. Charlie's Texas Camp Knife from GEC is a very large knife but maybe they'll make a smaller version in the future... maybe on the 35 handle. Rough Rider makes a 4 blade stockman that is similar. I think it has a spey instead of a punch.

More good suggestions. I suppose I forgot to mention I'd prefer a US made knife. But that Colt and some of the Marbles and Rough Riders sure do look pretty! How's the quality on the imported brands?

I'm not a fan but opinions vary greatly. It will be a usable knife. In my opinion, you are much better off with the Electrician that you already own. Blade steel is 440A. The cover materials are low quality. I'd stick with the yellow but it is streaky and feels cheap compared to delrin. Some folks like the bone but it is low quality for the most part. Sometimes it looks good in photos and then when I actually see it then it's very disappointing. Some of the black stag bone seems to be made of higher quality bone than some of the others. The shell and celluloid is extremely low quality. The shell may have cracks and chips. There may be some gaps, blade rub etc. Often the spey blades rub the liners. Expect a product that matches the price.

Edit: oh yeah...the bail...

Good one. This has actually been on my short list for some time. It's in the running.

Thanks for your input. Thats kind of what I expected but I had heard the RR's in particular were a pretty good value. Think I'll stay away from them for now.

The Kabar 1152 is very easy and cheap to find on auction. Delrin covers, but carbon steel blades. Excellent quality. Manufactured by Camillus.

The WW2 Camillus Engineers Knife is very easy to find on auction, with various shields, or without. How much you pay is a matter of condition and rarity. The good ones rival anything made today. Jigged bone covers and carbon steel blades.

The Case 6445R can easily be found on auction. It’s a beast, but smaller than your huge Remington. Bone covers and carbon steel blades. A bit pricey, but a very solid knife.

Buzzbait you seem to know your camp knives! Thank you all for the info and examples. I'm bookmarking this thread for future reference. But for now....

I'm good :)

Just bit the bullet on this Remington. I Hope it's a decent example. The springs on my previous Camp/Bullet knife were quite weak. I look forward to giving this R4 a try. I suspect I'll be selling off some of my collection to fund some more camp knives to compare :)

The Case Jr Scout is a current production model, and really quite well made. Small like the Cub Scout Knife. Covers range from jigged bone to G10. Very functional with an outstanding punch.
