Does this knife exist?

Buzzbait you seem to know your camp knives! Thank you all for the info and examples. I'm bookmarking this thread for future reference. But for now....

I'm good :)

Just bit the bullet on this Remington. I Hope it's a decent example. The springs on my previous Camp/Bullet knife were quite weak. I look forward to giving this R4 a try. I suspect I'll be selling off some of my collection to fund some more camp knives to compare :)

Good choice. I think you’ll love the quality of the R-4. Every one I’ve ever handled has been excellent. Better fit and finish than your average camp knife. If your previous camp/bullet knife was an R3843, I understand your pain. Those knives definitely had issues with pull strength.

It was an R4243. I really liked it but the size and weak springs would have relegated it to shelf queen status.

I wouldn't avoid the Rough Rider. Sure yourey not getting a Case knife, but for like $10 they are good looking beaters that offer a ton of patterns you can try before investing in the expensive versions. If you find a pattern you like you can get the Case or GEC then gift the RR to a knife Muggle ;)

Look for PAL BLADE CO spec 41-J-4 made for the USN BuShips in WW2. They can usually be found at $40 or less. The top is a PAL Army spec 17-170 the bottom a PAL USN 41-J-4.

Seems like you are willing to stray a bit from the original example. In addition to camp knives, you might consider something like the "beer scout" or "crown lifter" from GEC. Some "crown lifters" are still available from dealers. GEC also made similar knives with a spear or clip blade. Also, Case makes a mini trapper with a clip blade and combination bottle opener / screwdriver. Personally, I prefer the GEC 15 over camp knives. When it comes to camp knives, I feel spoiled by the slim and practical Swiss army knives. It would take a very nice antique or something extraordinary like Charlie's Texas Camp Knife, to take the place of a Swiss army knife. Oh! And don't forget the old Swiss army knives too! A 100+ year old Swiss army knife can be a real treat!

The Camillus C4 looks really great too. Probably my favorite of rhe suggestions so far. I haven't come across one before and wonder how hars they are to find :/

Any other suggestions welcome!
I grabbed a R4 on the exchange here for $35. They can be found, you just have to keep an eye peeled.

I sharpened/thinned the can opener tip to use as a pick for fishing line. It still works as a can opener, but pulls double duty now.

Edit: I have an R4, not a C4. I originally had it posted as a C4.

Camillus who made the Remington R4 also made their own badged/stamped knife, of the same pattern, the C4.

If I end up liking this R4 I think a C4 will be next. I do enjoy having a serrated blade as well as plain edge. Especially since it's not all that common on traditionals. I believe the Schrade 890T has a serrated sheepsfoot too and that's another one I'd like to get my hands on at some point.

Not all of the C4's have the serrated sheepfoot blade; I've seen for sale and own one with a plain edge on that second blade. The place that I got my C4 from had examples of both and I really wanted the plain bladed one as l have very limited experience with serrated blades. Be alert as to which knife you're looking at before buying if that makes any difference to you.

I lost one of the black scaled Craftsmans with the nicely swedged clip point blade like the one in Buzz's photo. I was carrying it to work every day several years ago (construction) and dropped it somewhere. :(

Thanks for the tip on the C4's!

It sucks losing a knife. My first knife was given to me when I joined the scouts in the late 80's. It was one of the red handled BSA scout pattern knives with a bail. I can't recall the manufacturer. I had that knife for years and I ended up losing it on some jobsite after I got out of high school. I was pretty upset about it, and still am. I've thought many times about buying another one just like it (they are still common on auction) but part of me feels like it just wouldn't be right....

Seconded on KaBar for the same delrin as your Remington
And RR scout for unbeatable value.

A few more Camillus-manufactured knives.

This is from the can of Camillus thread judging from the pic of the cartridge scout I think it’s what your looking for going to google size

My new (to me) R4 arrived today and I'm pretty happy with it. I somehow overlooked the fact that it lacks an awl lol. Might have to add another model to the collection :)
Lots of good suggestions in this thread. Thanks everyone!
