Dog Chew Puukko goes to Big Sur

Wow, Jon.

Brings back great memories of hiking in the Venatanas. Don't miss the poison oak, though.

Thanks for posting the pictures!

Beautiful scenery and gorgeous puukko!
Weather is miserable here so it's nice to see something like this. :)

An epic trip! Really nice shots, and, I must say you chose the right knife companion.

Thanks, Will

Today we took a drive from Santa Cruz to Big Sur. . .

. . .

This Puukko was rehandled by sitflyer and gifted to me, for which I am deeply grateful.

Superb thread! But that single pic above looks like an application of masterful sleight-of-hand, balancing skill.

thanks again to everyone for the positive comments

Looks like Axis deer (chital) antler. Really nice to work with.

Thanks for the info. I googled Chital, and learned they are commercially ranched in Texas. This particular stag antler dog chew, came from over 1000 miles away, North Carolina.

here are a couple other details from http://www.venison.com/axis.htm
"Excess Axis deer have been harvested in the Texas Hill Country since around 1980 with a state health inspector present and examining every carcass. No Axis carcasses have ever been rejected for health reasons out of thousands of animals….

Axis Deer meat was judged best tasting wild game meat by the Exotic Wildlife Association. It is a mild, naturally tender red meat. It contains less than 1% fat and can be marketed as fat free. (Red Deer and Fallow have 5% - 7% fat.) Axis Deer venison customers tend to be repeat customers."

and from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chital
"Chital also eat their shed antlers as a source of nutrients"

Thanks for sharing this. I really miss the trip we took there in 2009.

Big Sur Xmas

Went back to Big Sur, stopped at Tor House in Carmel. It is an amazing building, the work of one man mostly. The amount of work is mind boggling, and the way the building drapes down over the rock is amazing.

I then drove up into the hills of Big Sur to spend the night, 4wheeling in the dark. This is the morning after.

took a walk towards the ocean, Dog Chew Puukko came along:

After reentry into civilization I found a parking lot overlooking the ocean. Unfortunately the view included peoples dog crap, cigarette butts, and other detritus. One thing led to another, and I ended up cleaning the parking lot. I can imagine I made an impression on the many tourists, hairy hippy walking around in a Beret, wearing a Puukko and surgical gloves, picking up trash.

I try to tread lightly, and leave no trace, or leave the place better than I found it.

Happy New Year!

Fantastic scenery Jon! Looks like you had a great trip. Someday I'd like to see the rolling landscape of CA again. Thanks for sharing, and Happy New Year to you!

I did seen something on the "wires" about a "sensible, 60's era, surgically clad, seaside, Scandinavian wielding, scenery saving, stalwart" that was frightening the timid folk in that area.... :D

Great addition to the saga Jon...thank you!

thanks for your encouraging readership gentlemen I hope 2014 is a great year for you all

I was back in Big Sur yesterday, Dog Chew Puukko was with me. No puukko pics of the event, but here is a recent one from a past outing

Decided to make a fire, and someone had left some 2-4" diameter branches that just needed sawing and splitting. I reached for the saw and found it, but could not find the hatchet. hmmm I thought, I wonder if this Puukko I have dangling on my hip, can split dry oak?
battoning through the sections was
no problem!

fire in the hole
