..ouch, that hurt just looking at it.
I would sand it a bit like someone else said. Then I would wrap it well in grip tape. I've used tennis and hockey grip tape on my hatchets and worked great.
Other than that It's going to be tough. Not worth the time imo to mess with custom scales unless you know how to do it and have the time.
Go with grip tape online, it's cheap and fibrous, it fills in imperfections and gaps well..

they sent it free...... i think the model i had orriginaly was an old model. theve probably since changed to plastic..........
