hey guys,

my friend's female unneutered german shepherds keeps running away, for no apparent reason.

the reason why she is unneutered is because they want it to have pups (i get one!:D)

moreover, she gets meat, good food, lives in a pretty nice place, and my friend's family dont abuse and love dogs.

just last day, she ran away, they searched all night, and she turned up at the animal pound, luckily.

i am fearing that I may never get a puppy if she runs away, and I really want one. :(

But why is this in the general knife discussion? Anyways, i love german shepards, i had a lab/shepard mix for about 12 years. great dogs. They just have hind end problems as they get older, guess its just the breed. Good luck!

This should go in the Community section...

Sounds like your friends need a better fence. I'd hate to hear of their dog being hit by a car just because they don't have it under control. Also, I don't leave my dog outdoors unsupervised.

OT, but I hate to hear of people not getting their pets neutered, considering how many millions of dogs are put to sleep each year because the shelters are overcrowded. And if they want to breed it to a particular dog, that would be even more reason for a better fense. Running around loose, she'll get knocked up by every dog in town.

Spading and neutering often remove the desire to go out and spread their wild oats.
But wandering can also be breed specific. Check and see if this breed tends to wander or not, and if so, find another dog.

There must be something "interesting" that she's interested in checking out. Our lab-mix male was insistent in going over to the neighboring subdivision to play with all the kids and dogs that lived there. We finally put in a higher-end innotek underground fence system and spent the time training him on the boundaries. He needs a reminder occasionally, but he's learned pretty well and even stays in-bounds without the collar on for the most part. We still put the collar on if we're leaving for a while, tho.

She may want attention, companionship, or the neighbor dogs' food. It's tough to tell, but they need a better containment system.

Great Pyranese are famous wanderers. I've read that they can be five males away and still think they're "home".

Great Pyrenees tend to stake out a rather large territory and call it their own. They make great dogs if you have a few sections of ranchland for them to patrol. Any dog whose favorite snack food is the coyote is all right by me, but trying to keep one in town borders on animal cruelty.

I haven't spent much time around German Shepards, but they are bred for similar purposes. The Shepard mixes I have known have been escape artists and wanderers in spite of being nuetered. Unless your friend just loves dogs to the point of wanting any mix breed puppies she can bear, they need to either get her fixed or do some serious work on their containment system. As has been pointed out, many strays are put down every day, and large breed dogs are the hardest to find homes for.

I agree. Wonderful dogs with a gentle temprement, but they need plenty of space for leisurely exploring. I kept one for a couple of weeks, a stray that we had seen around town for a couple of months that happened to be walking right by the house. I put ads on the radio and in the paper. No one ever called, so I gave him to a nice family that lives in the country and is involved with a Great Pyranese club. They still have him, and he's been a wonderful family pet.

First if it's a female it's called spay. If she goes into heat, she may feel the urge to wander.

Secondly there should be a fence is there?

I guess the german shepherd can jump over their fence.

She is only about 4 months old (2 dog years?), so i dont think shes high.

The reason why it is not neutured is because they want it to have cubs. so do I, because I get one :D.

I've never had a female dog that wandered,to sow their wild oats, male dogs that aren't neutered will for sure,so I don't think spaying is the answer.Hunting breeds will wander to hunt,I had a female Lab that was good most times but when she wanted to go she would go for however long she wanted, most times it was less than a day and she didn't chase deer.If you live near woods, you might consider that,I think any breed will take a deer scent and go to investigate,if there are deer in the area. She could be bored, some dogs, especially working dogs do tend to get bored,if she is in a small fenced in area that could be a problem.Bottom line is,better fence or find outwhat is so interesting outside the fence.

Females are "spayed" not neutered.

And I hope you like mixed breed dogs, because she probably took off because she's in heat. No tellin' what that mongel mutt is gonna look like.

This is why RESPONSIBLE dog owners keep their animals in a secure pen, in a securely fenced yard (that cannot be tunneled under or leaped over), or better yet: kept indoors.
