Dog walking fixed blade

I don’t feel like I’m in immanent danger from a coyote attack and realize that they’re most likely going to leave me alone. I also know that IF I was attacked and couldn’t fend the coyote away using my flashlight that a knife would be a last resort action and I’d most likely be screwed at that point. Truth be told, it’s mostly to give my better half peace of mind for those times I go out late at night with the dog, and an excellent excuse/reason to get myself a new knife.

Bear spray or pepper spray. Anything else means a series of expensive rabies shots, which is the scariest thing about a coyote. Lol

We have coyotes here in Northern Cal, they only pose a risk to outdoor cats, in practice.

Then again, a week ago my direct neighbor saw a mountain lion (young males coming down from the mountains), and there have been multiple racoon gang attacks (e.g., https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-2010-nov-13-la-me-raccoon-20101114-story.html). Don't underestimate racoons, years ago a big male racoon was cornered by my 3 dogs back then, a Mastiff, a Dane, and a Rottweiler, and the 3 of them couldn't get close to him.

IMO, if it came to it, a walking staff would be more useful against a coyote than a knife.

OP, might already have a walking staff ? Knife and staff are not mutually exclusive ... in the end, it's about self-confidence, IMHO. If the knife helps with that, why not, it's legal here.

what you probably need is n inexpensive shank-like stabby double edged dagger. It really is an “OH SHIT !!! “ knife that you can deploy quick and stab away !!!

SWHRT9B from S+W would be the idea

Your flashlight idea works. I have had many coyotes follow me and my dog after dark, particularly during the winter months. I have found the strobe setting is the most effective, sending them running, usually 50-75 meters before stopping and turning around, green eye
Shine looking back at me, then slinking away.

Going a bit against the grain here. I put a 5,000 lumen emitter in a 6 D cell maglite and added a pretty serious crenelated striking bezel. I use it in lower lumen modes most of the time because 5,000 lumens is too much but it will blind an animal or person at some range. And it swings like a bat with sharp edges.

I’m carrying a Convoy L7 flashlight, an absolute torch running on 2-26650 batteries. First response would be using the strobe, followed by wielding it as a club.

Always wanted a 119, figure it’s a knife everyone should own. How is the stock leather sheath that comes with it? Is the knife quickly accessible? Currently, it’s a toss up between the Buck 119 and the Spyderco Street Bowie.

Looking at prices, you can get 'em both plus a case of beer for $200...

"Coyote attacks on humans are uncommon and rarely cause serious injuries, but have been increasing in frequency, especially in the state of California. In the 30 years leading up to March 2006, at least 160 attacks occurred in the United States, mostly in the Los Angeles County area."

They happen.

Get a knife you like, that fits your hand...

I carry a handgun and a fixed blade when I walk my dogs. My concerns are more people and aggressive dog related....

Fatty, if you've got CCW in L.A. County, you must be a cop. You could just have the coyotes sit on the curb while you run warrants on them.

I'm in WA state.... I have loved in ID, UT also ..

You're arming yourself in WA for coyotes that are, according to your citation, in CA. Sounds extremely prudent.

I live in L.A. County. I have confronted coyotes on a few occasions. In terms of being a threat to my health and safety, they are much less dangerous than my first, and perhaps even my second, wife. That's not counting a girlfriend I once had who was completely pyscho and would hunt you down for grocery store coupons. But that, as they say, is another story.

Another quote...
"Coyotes (Canis latrans) have expanded their range across much of North America and are now established in many metropolitan areas. Their presence in urban areas has often elicited concern from the public, although the actual risk that they pose to human populations is unclear. We conducted an analysis of coyote attacks on humans in the United States and Canada, including 142 reported incidents of coyote attacks resulting in 159 victims. Most attacks were classified as predatory (37%) or investigative (22%) in nature. The number of reported attacks was nearly equal between adults and children."

They are located in most areas.

They are all over the place where I live...

I hear packs every single night. .

I've been called out by a farmer friend to hunt them, because a pack of coyotes chased his grand children up the playground toys in their back yard...

I've personally witnessed coyotes rip a full sized hound dog to pieces and seriously injure the German Shepard who tried to intervene. We got the German Shepard back insider's house injured....we only found blood and fur left over from the hound...

I've also been chased by bear....more than once... and frequent areas with cougars as well....so snide....judge comments aside...I posted a quote from an article saying that they happen frequently in CA....where....Unless I misread it...OP is walking in the hills outside town....

But I carry more because I have active gang bangers all over my city......Off leash pitbulls .... and general meth heads.

I posted that quote because turds are giving OP a hard time about asking for knife recommendations..on a bloody knife forum....

This dad had to fight one off with his bare hands got some bites in the struggle...

I could keep posting stories...but you can search if you want...

Oh to live in an open carry state, but carrying a handgun in LA County ain’t gonna happen. At least they’re not as draconian when it comes to knives.

Bigfattyt Bigfattyt Your point is duly noted, Fatty. But, in fairness, the OP sort of admitted that picking the right knife to use in a coyote attack was probably not the best strategy for success.
