i wonder, how good can a human survive on dog or catfood?

i once read that a dog can survive on catfood but a cat can't survive on dogfood, because it lacks a few nutrients the cat really needs.

might also have been the other way around..

one thing is for certain, they both got lots of protein and fat.

Well, I'm sure you could survive just fine, but it wouldn't be my first choice.

As far as a cat not being able to survive on dogfood, that seems a little weird. Cat's have survived just fine on things they pull out of the garbage. My house cat eats potato chips, and my outside cats eat anything they can swallow.

Back in 1999, I researched this as part of Y2K readiness, that was a waste, but I did learn from the companies that virtually all canned and dry cat & dog food is considered safe for human consumption.

IF you can keep it down. :D

hmmm i wonder, dog and catfood cant be the same

why wud they have dog and catfood anyway, and isnt dogfood cheaper than catfood?

why not just give ur cats dogfood then?

no i seriously think there is a nutritional difference between the two

and i think if u give ur cat nothing but potato chips it'll first grow very fat and then die because it simply cant survive on potatoes and plant oil

save ok, but i wonder if u can survive on it, or at least for how long and what kind of food defficienties it well create

like if u had nothing else to eat

i've also heard that trappers who ate nothing but rabbits also died, cos rabbits lack certain nutrients

(i bet it all starts with vit c shortage)

rabits have no fat...
it's called protien poisoning.

dog biscuts... idk if you could survive eating them, but they don't taste that bad.
:D

I remember my dad telling me years ago that the reason that pet food companies didn't put contraceptives in their products to curb rampant "accidental" breeding was that there were some poor or old people that bought pet food because it was the only food they could afford. :barf:

Eh, I don't know if there's a difference in nutrition. I would imagine they could both survive on either. My cat does eat other things obviously. His diet consists of cat food, tuna, sardines, chicken, etc. He doesn't eat potato chips regularly, but he does love cheddar and sour cream ruffles when I give them to him. He's going on 12 years now, and is in perfect health.

I had an uncle die from eating dog food! My aunt gave the dog some canned food and put the rest on a saucer, covered it with Saran wrap and put it in the fridge. My uncle, thinking it was dip of some kind, ate it and died!
HOW DID HE DIE?
Later that evening he was sitting on the couch, licking his gonads and he fell off and broke his neck!

This is called "rabbit starvation". It's not due to lack of vitamins, but lack of fat. Rabbits are extremely lean. This is easily remedied by eating the internal organs and eyeballs, which have plenty of fat.

On a note related to the thread, but completely unrelated to my previous statement in this post ...

I recall a study years ago, where two researchers lived entirely on potatoes for (I think) a year, with no ill effects.

That did it. Now you owe me a keyboard and screen cleaning. I blew Diet Coke out of my nose when I read that.

:D

So what part of this story is the fault of the dog food? I do that after a nice steak dinner. The trick is to have someone hold your feet. :p

I'm not above grabbing a milk bone for a little snack every once in a while. The plain coloured ones taste the best!

I work in a feed mill for a living formulating and producing animal feeds. The difference between dog and cat food is huge. Lets put it this way I would eat dog food "IF I HAD TO" but not cat food. The cat food we make is sprayed with PHOSPHORIC ACID and contains some pretty hard core preservatives. It was formulated to accomodate the feline digestive system, not humans or dogs. Dogs should not eat cat food. There is a good chance they will become ill depending on the formula.

Well that settles it. Starting Tomorrow, I will not eat any more catfood.

A friend of mine told me he found a bag of snacks on the counter of his home that he thought was labeled pepperoni. He ate a few and he told me he thought they tasted a little waxy and bland. Closer examination of the bag revealed the label said Pup-peroni.

dog treats

I don't think I would have shared that.

It would have to get pretty bad before I started eating dog or cat food. Hopefully I'd have enough knowledge to find other sources of edible and better food. Can't you starve to death on fish as well? How do other animals who eat only fish survive?

phosphoric acid!? :O

hey isnt there some kind of vet or something on this forum that can give a sort of definitive answer :/
