Dogs on the Trail

At least in the Pacific Northwest, in the National Forests, dogs must be on leash at all times. I watches a hiker with a fairly well behaved un-leashed dog get a $500 fine. In the Mt Hood national forest near Portland Or., a Ranger told me and my son that at the place we were camped, the day before he had had to kill a dog that the owner first would not leash, then sicked on him. He was handing out tickets that day. In the Pacific Northwest we are getting the National Forest gravel roads closed because people will not follow the rules. As I am partially handicapped, I am loseing my access to most of the national forest areas because others feel the rules do not apply to them. Un-leashed dogs are only a very minor problem (trash, quads, motorcycles, lawsuits, and squatters are the main problems), but everyone who wont follow the rules are giving those who do not want us there ammunition.
Sorry, Rant off. As you can tell this subject (not dogs) is a very sore point.

I'm with Ed. Every time... I say, every time... I go out hiking or camping at least one of my guys goes with me. They're good at both short and long hikes (anywhere from 1-10 miles) and they have as much fun as I do.

I will say that they are always on a lead connected to me when we hike and we do move off the trail for other hikers so we don't cause any issues with people who may be afraid of dogs.

that black shepard is a 1st for me. flat out beautiful, have to admit that to a stranger coming around a corner & meeting that dog --might give a fright.
dennis

He is a little intense looking at first glance...then the tongue comes out and the licking begins.

I take Zeus with me whenever I can(even to the office-my patients love him)

But he is VERY well trained.

I do not need a leash anymore..and other than on walks at night -he never has one on.

But unfortuantly VERY few people train their dogs that well--in fact very few people train their dogs --at all.

I think people should leash their dogs if they can not control them on the trail.
Gorgeous black and tan. I hope to have mine trained that well someday. He's doing well for a year old, but still gets distracted pretty easily so he stays on his leash when we're in public. I agree that poorly behaved, uncontrollable dogs need to stay at home.
