I have a fresh dogwood stump in my backyard does anyone know if it makes good scales? I heard that it does not have nice color or figure even in the roots is this true?
thanks.

True; it has a nice pink hue to it and is hard as can be. The best fire wood on earth, from a man who burned wood for 25 years.

It makes a great mallet head. Mine got a blight, and I used it for that. Its almost as hard as Persimmon, which was used as splitting wedges once upon a time.

Had not thought of a mallet head. But that makes seance. We live in Dogwood country, here in S/E Ohio; I'll put a mallet head on my list of to do's.
