So I recently got a Falkniven Thor for my birthday, Wooo Hooo! It comes with a pretty sharp convexed edge, but not being satisfied with "pretty" sharp, I worked on it untill it was hair popping.

So the other night I'm standing in my kitchen messing with this knife, when it slipps from my hand.... before I can think I grab for it with my left hand (no I'm apparently not too bright) it takes a chunk cleanly off the end of my middle finger.

Focussed on my finger I hear the knife hit the floor but feel no other pain. I take a step, and the weirdest sensation hits me... it feels like the floor is caveing in under my right foot...

I look down and see this...

OOPS!... Turns out I severed my achilles tendon without even feeling it! DOH!!!

I rapped it with a dish towel and sinched it up tight with my belt, luckily the wife was there to drive me to the hospital. She wasn't too happy considering we're having a baby next week, and now she'll have to take care of both of us.( Ironically she baught me the knife in the first place )

Surgery went Ok, and a day later I was sent home. The important thing is that "NO KNIVES WERE HARMED" in this incident! :o

I've been there, brother.

I tried catching a falling knife and cut off the tip of my thumb (which grew back!) and had the knife stick in my bare foot, hitting a major vein.

I did the silly catch the falling knife thing about a month ago, cut was so clean and smooth. Went down to the bone and the knife didnt slow down.
I have a friend that is a chef and when he found out what happened he told me how he never trys to catch a falling knife he just kicks at them to save the tips. Guess that one wouldn't have helped you any

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention how impressed everyone working in the emergency room was, they all brought other people in to check out the cut and ask "what kind of knife did that?"

One nurse said "I hope it was a nice knife, because it just cost you $40,000!"
Hoping my insurance covers most of that!

Did it look like this? I wasn't looking at what I was chopping and the hatchet made a piece go bye byes. Took these when I removed the bandage the next day. That white thing is a piece of NON ADHESIVE bandage that got stuck in there. :grumpy:

Good call seeking medical help immediately. Infections in any area involving a tendon / sheath needs professional attention (particularly when it involves the hands).

BryFry,

Good luck, and I wish you a speedy recovery. I was cringing just reading your story, and positively jumping out of my chair when I saw the picture.

I had a similar occurrance when I slipped and sliced into my pinky around 6 years ago. It took me about 6 months to get full movement out of it again, and it still goes numb if I happened to hit it wrong.

Good luck, heal up soon, and I hope all goes well with the new li'l young'un coming along.

Luckily, I've managed nothing more than a couple of minor cuts, knock on wood.

thx - cpr

Thanks for the well wishes guys.

Dad always used to get on me for treating my knives like toys, I've cut myself too many times to count (as I'm sure many of us here have), even stuck a blade through my foot, and stuck one in my wrist, (threw a knife at a tree, and the tree threw it right back) but I always just shrugged it off, stuck some duck-tape on it, and let it heal.

This is the first time I've been (what I would consider) seriously injured by my own blade, and it is an eye opener for me. A reminder to respect the blade and be a bit more careful in the future.

I'm just glad this happened in my kitchen, and not out on a solo hike in the middle of nowhere!

Stay safe people.

Thats a bad one. I sliced my index finger to the bone on Friday toying around with my new Emerson. Thought it was bad until I read that one. Hope you have a speedy recovery.

Heal well ,but remember the important thing is not to be scared of the knife when you get another chance to use it .

First off, I'd like to wish you a speedy and complete recovery. I wish you and your wife and your upcoming baby the best.

Secondly, and I hope this doesn't come off as too strange under the circumstances, but I can't help but be curious as to the 'work' you did on this blade to get it to this TRULY FRIGHTENLY SHARP condition. What did you do to touch up the edge on this knife?

I'd sell that thor and buy another, unless you can form a pact with it to never draw family blood again.

I make a pact with all my blades, upon opening, i ask that they serve their purpose well, and I tell them what that is. And then I use them for that only. SO far I haven't been bit too bad.

I had one awhile back too...UPS guy made a surprise visit on me while I was in my shop on my buffer....laid my hand open really bad requiring many stitches and flung that blade in about three directions after it left my hand as well. Had he not been an ok kid, I'd have rattled the windows in his wheelhouse for that one....he left having learned a very good lesson.....you NEVER grab a guys arm from behind while running a buffer....or any other power tool. That one took me out of the shop for a month or so.

Hope you heal up ok....

That is a freaking awesome "oopsie" on the Achilles. It's hard to believe that a knife falling from a height of only 3 feet or so, could inflict such damage. On the bright side, you proved that you know how to get a good edge!

I always wondered what the inside of a leg looks like.

One of the few times It's great to be Canadian.:p

Hope you heal up soon my friend. :)

Truly sorry to hear / see that sir.... I REALLY wish you a fast recovery, (thankfully, the human body is SURPRISINGLY resilient!) and good luck with your new baby (my wife is preg 2... :) )

It is amazing how frighteningly quick our beloved toys can bite us back!
I once had a Martindale glance off a papaya trunk (ironically, about the softest tree in the world!), and hit me squarely below the knuckle of my middle finger SPINE FIRST!!! Nail turned BLACK almost instantly!
Had it been edge on, I would've had one less fingernail to cut today :thumbdn: !

On the bright side (is there one??), @ least you got cut with something about as sharp as a surgeon's scalpel... about the cleanest, most sterile, self-inflicted injury you could get!
Should heal very quickly / well!

Heal up quick. Next time GET OUT OF THE WAY!:) You can always have the tip reground.
