Went to cut through a piece of hose today at work with my with Benchmade 525 and didn't realize until it was too late that it was reinforced with wire mesh. I knew immediately something was off when it didn't cut right through. Looked and saw the steel mesh in the cut, then looked at my blade and it was chipped and rolled nearly the entire length except near the tip LOL. Whooopsss *face palm*. It always looks worse than it is and luckily the chips weren't huge. Some patience working with the Sharpmaker medium stones to fix the chips at the edge and it's back to shaving sharp with the white stones.

I try to be careful not to cut things like metal but today I goofed. This is my daily EDC and it's already seen a lot of hard use so what can you do, just have to try to be more careful next time... Hopefully I'm not the only one who has done something stupid like this by accident :D

I used to work at an online book store. Can't tell you have many times I was opening boxed books, slicing through brown packing tape, only to find out that some dingle put those big brass cardboard staples underneath the tape...

These things really ought to come with warnings. :p

This was sort of on purpose, just an MTech bowie. It held up really well chopping and batoning, but if you whack the edge right into the inner rim of an old tire, it will blow out in dramatic fashion. The pic was taken a while after the fact. The knife was field sharpened and went right back into duty.

Ouch! I found out the same thing when I was chopping some tree roots with my Becker BK9 and accidentally found the metal edging of the yard... My fault.

That wasn't your only goof. You also made a topic containing the words "shouldn't of" in the title... >_<
You're thinking of the contraction "shouldnt've" which is short for "should not have", but when you never see it written, and only heard it spoken aloud, it might sound like "shouldn't of", but that's totally wrong.

Hey, you shoulda had one of them newfangled super-steel knives. Woulda cut through it like butter, I bet.

Eh, stuff happens. Exactly what type of hose was it (use)?
I'm sure I've used my knife to cut some things that weren't edge friendly a few times (when appropriate tool was not available). I just try not to do anything that will require anything more than sharpening later.
What is super steel? Can it still cut through kryptonite if I need it to?

Actually, I think kryptonite is used to make the blade.

I did the same thing with my PM2 when I was installing the soft-top on my Wrangler. There was a heavy rubber seal that fit alongside of the tailgate that was too long so of course I whipped out my knife and eagerly sliced into it to trim it down only to find out it was also reinforced with wire mesh. I also had some work to do on the sharpmaker after that.

Good for you! You actually use your knives!

A chip or ding here and there worries me not a bit. I don't sharpen em out.... If you do, you are literally shaving years of usage off your blade just to make it "pretty" again.

It is a knife. What is it's purpose? To cut stuff, no? Does it still cut stuff? Even with chips or dings, whatever, in the edge? It does? Then, no problem. Just keep on keepin on, and eventually, over the course of many sharpenings (and many years of usage) those chips and dings will be long gone and all that quality steel will not have been wasted just to sharpen out a few unsightly dings.

Unfortunately I made the cut in one swift motion with a bit of force so the rolls and chips were across nearly the entire edge and were bad enough that the knife was completely dull, I had no choice but to sharpen it. It didn't take too long to clean the blade up, luckily it was only the very edge that was chewed up no deep chips. Probably shaved a year off the life of the blade but what can you do, just have to make sure next time I attempt to cut through rubber it's not reinforced with metal!

I had no choice but to sharpen it.

OK, Its time for you to admit that you were happy that it gave you a chance to sharpen your knife! :D LOL

Knives are tools. You didn't intentionally abuse it. It just happened in the line of duty! No real harm, No Foul! Beside, now you can start looking for another knife to tackle this tough hose next time!

Were you thinking of "shouldn't've"?

Actually, that would be a double contraction. It is not a real word. The proper way for him to have said it would have been "shouldn't have". What happens in spoken English is that we often sub-vocalize parts of words or do not say them at all. So, when he hears 'shouldn't have' from most people, they drop the first part of have and say 've, which sounds like uhv, hence he hears 'of'.
