Well I feel like an idiot…

I've been carrying my new #15 Farm Boy the last couple days, and yesterday I used it to cut up a couple things at lunch. Afterwards, as I was rinsing the blade off, there was a stubborn piece of food stuck to it that I couldn't quite rub off with my fingers. Well, there was one of those yellow and green Scotch Brite sponges sitting by the sink, so I grabbed it and (using the green side) made a few light passes over the blade (towards the edge/tip) and dislodged whatever was stuck to it. Only after drying it off did I notice what I'd done. I wouldn't have thought that the nylon fibers (I think it's nylon?) on the sponge would have scratched the blade (I did use it very lightly), but obviously I was wrong.

It's not a huge deal, really. I bought the knife to use it, but it's still frustrating, especially because I've had it less than a week. Not sure if there's any way to easily remedy the scratches, but if you have any suggestions I'd certainly appreciate them. Otherwise, I'll just keep using it, hope that a nice patina might make them less noticeable (though somehow I doubt it), and kick myself a little whenever I look at the scratches. Lesson learned.

I'd just get some fine sandpaper or a rust eraser and even it out.

Just gives it a bit of character IMO. I'd say don't worry about it. It will inevitably get a few more 'battle scars' as you continue to use and enjoy the knife.

I've been there myself, and hated how foolish I felt. It's a lesson learned and a signed that your knife was loved enough to be carried. Now, I'm starting to think I've got a few that need a few more signs of use.

Personally, I wouldn't be concerned. But if it bothers you, get some wet sandpaper and work your way up to 600 grit. You should be able to even that out.

No biggie. Just wait until that knife has been carried and used for a dozen or two dozen years.

if you did it right ,and like the look of them, you could possibly sand it to look like the case as ground blades/models. not saying you should, just that you could.i think it looks cool now ,so who's to say?

Never regret a lesson! Now you know what ScotchBrite can do!!
If you forget, just look at your beautiful user knife!!
Patina-ness is next to Godliness!!

I agree with patina-ness is godliness. The knife is meant to be used and you've done so already. Patina and scratches are all adding character and life to your knife!

I often remove blotchy patina using scotchbrite type stuff. You could rub the blade a bit more with it to achieve a more uniform effect. It also enhances an even patina when it next starts taking colour anyway. Just don't get it on the edge, surprising how this can dull an edge fast:eek::eek:

As a kid - I did the same thing, only to the windshield on my Dads truck to take the frost off. I blamed him for having one of those things in the vehicle to begin with but he didn't see it that way.

Least it was just on the passenger side before he stopped me when he seen what I was doing. So every time I was in his truck I got a reminder of what I did. :)

What Will said...

Does anybody think Flitz would even it out?

What Mike said!

After you break down a cardboard box or two, it's gonna pick up way more scratches than that.. Or open UPS box that has been taped with that plastic packing tape. It just shows honest wear.

I don't think Flitz would take it out without a lot of scrubbing...better off going through wet sandpaper progression if you don't like the new wear marks:)

Thanks for the responses, y'all. Not sure I trust myself taking sandpaper to it. I'll probably just leave it as it is.

I really do like this knife a lot, and I like for my users to look like they've been used. I guess this instance just irritated me because the knife was so new and I felt dumb scratching it up like that.
