Does anyone make a good doming or spinning tool? I have a couple that aren't worth the price of their scrap weight. If you were to make one would you get some 0-1 rod, cup it and split it down the middle for an 1/8" or so with a jewelers saw, harden it, and leave it hard...no tempering? Thanks

Spun rivets are used on production knives as an expediant. There is no need to do this on hand made knives-just peen the rivets. I do restoration work on folding knives and I still peen by hand.
If I were to make one, I would temper it to spring hardness.

John in my experience D2 holds up better. Just turn two 1/2" rods down into a 60 degree cone shape. I use a 1/8" drill to make the doming dimple and polish with wet dry. Harden to full hard and no temper. I hope this helps. Email me if you want me to make you set.

John, I sometimes use domed pins with deer antler handles, and I use my drill press to dome them, just grind the pin flat on your grinder, and chuck in the drill press, at a medium to high speed and use a file to cut the dome shape, just start with the file flat on the side of the pin and rotate it around to the end of the pin knocking the corner off, and finish with sand paper folded and backed up with your finger, progress through the grits to get the desired finish. I have never tried one of the spinners, as this works fine for the look that I want.
Hope this helps, Dale
