My new variable speed 2x72 grinder. Just finished building it at my friend's fab shop. (Quill Hyde, he's a whiz with design and fab.) The main parts were cut out on a CNC plasma torch, with a graphic of a snake wrapped around a torch, (Promethean Knives) I used the big contact wheel off my old hollow grinder, which meant we had to bore it for bearings to work with a square tooling arm setup, which lead to the slightly funky spacing issues you see on the attachments. It does not affect performance or ease of use however, it tracks nice and has plenty of power. That is a 3 HP, 3PH Baldor motor with the Teco FM50 VFD. It's a sensitive brute, just like I like. The VFD mount on the grinder frame is temporary, I'm mounting the VFD on the wall soon and using remote controls to keep it out of harm's way. The attachments all work great, the small wheel is just UHMW but would grind a little smoother with a rubber tire... I'm going to get a KMG small wheel fork for it eventually, though. I turned the tracking and idler wheels out of UHMW too, if it works for Bob Dozier it's good enough for me. I'm STOKED on this machine!

Cooooool!!!

I like how your graphic can be layered with meanings. Not only can it represent the many esoteric or mystical symbolisms of a snake and a torch, but also the materialism of $ too.

You should repaint those garish orange belts. ;)

Great looking grinder. I hope it serves you well until the cockroaches rule the nuclear wasteland.

I'm gonna let it rust for a little while as I ponder the color scheme... maybe instead of repainting the blaze belts, I'll just paint the grinder blaze orange. And then make a bunch of knives with blaze orange G10. Or maybe try to find roughing belts and G10 in a hammered green finish, then paint the grinder to match. Yeah Phil, oddly I realized that it looks like a dollar sign after it was cut out and installed. Kinda makes me feel like Mike Snody. I guess that's not so bad... Oh, I know, I'll paint the grinder with a scene of a nuclear wasteland with cockroaches so that it will blend in with the scenery a little down the road...

Hey man, your grinder is a whole lot better looking than mine for sure! I do have one observation. I have the same VFD, and it is not NEMA 4 rated. When you say out of harm's way, you mean in a filtered box? Even if is is mounted away from the grinder (unless we are talking mounted in another room free from metal dust) it should be in a filtered box.

Please do not take it the wrong way, I am in no way trying to bust balls, it would just suck to have your awesome grinder and a VFD that popped.

I used fram air filters for mine and it sits on spacers so I get airflow underneath.

Sweet, I may actually post some grinding vids when I can- I always like watching them. Gixxer, you're right- on the wall away from the grinder is not completely out of harms way- that was merely my 1/2-assed plan until LO and BEHOLD! My pal here has a stack of used motor drives with NEMA 4 enclosures and all the switches and speed controls on the faceplates. It's like the size of a regular filing cabinet drawer, but heck I'll just build it it's own stand next to the grinder. Those things are rad.

Where did you get the white idler wheels? I never saw any like that.....

Ive got a grinder in a box to put together, ill need wheels...

Hey Cartophilis, made those white idler wheels out of UHMW plastic on a metal lathe. I gave them a little crown with a rasp and they track well. Plus they were cheaper to make than buy... I'd make some for you at a real good price, if you are interested shoot me a P.M. and I'll get back to you.
