I've been working on sheaths for a couple weeks. Something I really don't care to do and I find myself going off course really easy. Anyway I just started on the larger sheaths and at the sametime I found myself running out of leather. Last night I got started on a couple of the larger sheaths. I got the backs cut out, belt loops glued and stitched, and the double welts glued in place. This morning when I went out to the shop I happened to notice the pile of scrap leather laying on the bench. You know those pieces that are just to big to toss but there's really nothing you can do with them except to make a pile. A light bulb must have come on. Here's where I'm at with the green sheath. Its 40% recycled leather.

that's great Ray! Did you have any trouble with the edges? I guess you sanded the top piece pretty good to keep the "shingle" look out of the sides/edges?

I was wondering where you've been --- now i see -- just bending leather for a few weeks...

That little hunter is SWEET.

Here's a picture of the finished sheath. As usual the picture doesn't look as good as the real thing. I'm pleased with it. Now I just need to make somemore scrape.

:DRay I now know who will take all my scrap leather. I boxing them up along with about 5 years of old belts for ya. I bet you can find a use for them too.

Bruce, How about a couple bags of walla walla's to. Make sure the belts aren't plastic....... same goes for the onions.

I'll see what I can do but most all the onion fields are growing wine grapes now. There are about 80 wineries here now. Is wine OK instead of onions?

Here's another sheath I just finished up. The piece of leather I used for the finished side was large enough but to irregular to work in one piece so I cut it up and did pretty much as the first sheath.

How secure are the steps? Just wondering if they feel like they might would pull up or anything like that over time. Would it work to skiv/taper them so the steps weren't as tall? I know I'm always snagging corners/etc of my sheath on stuff. Those look really cool dyed

I did put a taper on both pieces of leather to make the joints. They glued up real solid. I also hammered each joint. I think they should do just fine.

Good to know :] Now I'll have something cool to do with the leather scraps I will hopefully start accumulating one day (Haven't had but two customers and one wanted kydex).
