Ok, I'm sitting at home munching on pizza writing my review of the daily hike. Thank god I'm home! Crummy day, mostly because of my own idiocy. Here is the tale:

I rounded up some sausage, cheese, bread, and water, packed up my devildog, knives, and number 1 son, and headed out. So far so good :foot:

Now I live on a 90+ acres horse ranch (not mine), and we were both wearing hoodies. It wasn't enough. Wind cut right through us. Error #1.

We sloshed through the mud getting our feet a little wet, but no biggie. We aren't afraid of a little mud. :D

We arrived in the woods and decided to take some pics for you all to admire. Even the fuzzy pic! Notice the smiles on our faces? This is before the cold and wetness hit us. We never did eat the food we brought.

Mistake #2 was not pre-tying the lines to the tarp we POORLY tied to act as a windbreak. Our hands were frigid by the time we got it strung up.

Mistake #3 was me not wearing gloves and smacking my dang finger with my not-so-beloved-Becker ;) No cut occured.

Found an old shingle to build the fire on...I hate how people throw crap in the woods.

Fire took a quite a few matches to start, very windy! After starting (thanks to dryer lint AND fatwwod) I kept it going for a few minutes with some of the kindling my beloved Becker had procured, but with my son griping about the rain, urging me to head back and complaining about how cold he was, we didn't have enough wood gathered, and I admitted I was pretty cold too. We hightailed it home, showered, and went at the pizza like hungry wolves.

Glad I practice at home! :o

Looks cold. Still its nice to get out for awhile huh???? I bet that was some delicious pizza though bro! Ahhh.... the infamous sam..... Tell him thanks for being the name I picked!!

Nothing wrong with that day IMO. Glad to hear you didn't cook after seeing the fire get started on that shingle...

great pics! crummy experiences in the field are the ones that are the most helpful - discomfort is the world's best teacher. can't count the number of times i've learned the tried and true lesson of: "ok, i'm not doing it this way again!" just last winter i left the house without a wool hat - which i never do. that lesson should last me a couple years before i forget again :D

My son and I enjoy similar outings.

Most of our early bush craft practice took place in the wood lot on the back side of my 8 acre yard. Several nights we said to heck with it and made for the dry warmth of the house.
As we gained in knowledge, skill, and equipment we moved our practice sessions to my 21 acre property in the county just north of us. This is were we deer and turkey hunt so we know the property pretty well. It has steep foot hill type slopes, a wide deep creek and plenty of dead firewood, natural food, and game.

Still having the truck nearby is comforting in case you get in a bind.

;)

We still take weekends and go out with various levels of gear to try and survive for a day or two in our woods for fun and practice. Some weekends we go out with a pocket survival kit and our EDC knives. Some weekends we take a rucksack with loaded with a three to four day survival kit. This is the same type kit I carry in my vehicle at all times.

At least once a season we go out for natural food weekend. The rules here are simple. You eat what you find, catch or kill. Some seasons are easier than others. Fall is my favorite since we combine it with small game season.

Rocky,

Sounds like one of my outings!!! They are fun anyway, being in the woods is always great (even wet and cold!).

great pics rocky...

a crappy day in the woods, beats a crappy day at work anyday...:D

A crappy day in the woods always trumphs a good day at work. :)

Anyway it you got a lesson out of it, Propper Preperation Prevents Piss Poor Performance.

I agree 100% with akennedy. The lesson you learned from this hike, hopefully will prevent you from doing this again when you're going somewhere more remote and you can't run back home to pizza, beer, roast beef, soft pillows, central heating, electric lights, porcelain fixtures, warm and nice smelling wives and girl friends............................ Oh, sorry, it's cold and raining here, today, too. :o

Doc

Man, I'd like to do EXACTLY what you did. I'm sitting here on the couch watching my 4yo and my 6yo who have NO intrest in the woods at all.

I have waited for years for my 2 sons to show an interest. I'm done waiting and we are learning together! I'm still a newbie but every time we go out things get easier. I want the 3 of us to take some classes so we can get expert training...books only go so far. Yours will come around, especially if you show a strong interest in the outdoors. :)
