INFI, the holy grail...

It's been a while since I did a thread.

I am a relative neophyte, I am sure.

BUT ATS-34 cyro and all other treatments added in...like at www.iccknives.com...can it compare?

Again, does anything? Yes I own a bunch of Busses but have the right to ask!

I am a fan of ATS-34 because my old Benchmades are all made of it...very stain resistant...holds a decent edge...but without the weight/abuse...hard to compare to big Busse use with more action...

JupiterJazz, Welcome to the forum.

I'm just a bit confused on what your question is here.

Please clarify so we can answer it properly.

Your thread title is a bit misleading.

What Busse's do you have? Have you used them?

Let us know.

Mike

I am a big Busse fan - have the Badger Attack (older 1/4" one), Mr. Mojo and the Satin Jack - to answer the question.

My question was not clear, OK. I am asking if ATS-34 can compare to INFI.

I love the Busse's but got tempted by the workmanship of the ICC Knives and am wondering, like with all other makes, is the blade material that bad of a trade-off? ATS-34 instead of INFI...

can it compare?

No.

Jerry used ats34 back in the early 90's.
It was also guaranteed for life, but he found better performance from other steels.
Then he came up with INFI, nothing holds up like it does.

Jerry has always said if he ever finds a steel that will out perform INFI he will switch....

Jupiter, welcome aboard. If Jerry thought enough of ATS-34 to use in knives bearing his name - it must be a worthy steel. Jerry is one always looking to improve. He has a reputation of making very tough knives with an even tougher warranty. If Jerry went to INFI after using ATS-34 it could have been for not other reason than improving upon the performance criteria of the knives. I like ATS-24 as well and have a bunch of folders in that very steel, but I do not believe that it can compare to INFI for the applications and intended uses of Busse knives.

ATS-34 isn't suitable for large knives of that type, it is far too brittle. For that class of blades you want a steel which has a high impact toughness and flexibility, these are two very weak points of the high carbon cutlery stainless grades such as ATS-34. Those stainless blades will break at very low prying angles, and fracture under low impacts.

Cliff's right,SS doesnt absorb energy as well as a high carbon steel.Big knives are better with a carbon type steel but for small knives ats-34 is fine as is cpm30v.
