Don't hate me but . . .I just Won a . .

I think the best summary I've heard of Macs is that "They're computers for people that don't won't to have computers as a hobby." Many of the benefits touted by the Mac camp are nothing that can't be achieved on a PC with tweaking and intelligence. For instance, I've never had a virus infect one of my PCs in over 10 years of use and I know how to tweak settings to shed some of the bloatware (and even if I didn't, there's a lot of free guides online about the subject). All this requires time spent learning of course. I wouldn't do it if I didn't enjoy it, but not everyone likes playing with settings to get things just right.

People, People, People. We're forgetting the pertinent part of this story:
IT WAS FREE

That is all, Congrats!

I went from a top of the line Dell laptop to a mid-range G5 last year. I like them both but I prefer the Mac. Limited software offerings are the biggest drawback to the Mac from my perspective. But, that disadvantage is minimal when you consider that it takes next to no effort to keep a Mac from getting all buggered up by viruses, spyware and the lot.

PC people can compare this and that all they want, but the bottom line is that Macs are superior in every way and if people disagree it is due to ignorance, jealousy, or both. Macs rule, no way around it. Viva Mac!

That can't be right. You forgot to mention the ones who are possessed by Satan.

I think Ron has a good view, I share most of it and I am coming from the "IT geek" side as it is what I do for a living.

I personally would sell it, but thats preference, some things are much easier on a mac. For those that like to tinker and many of the more advanced things macs just can't and won't at least a lot of the software that I need and use daily.

I have spent plenty of time on macs in all my graphic design classes in school and to be serious, the damn G5s crashed on me WAY more than my home PC. I've actually never had my PC crash with Photoshop 2 and it happened at least twice a week in my class, really annoying. I have friends with macs that swear by them.

They just are not my cup of tea, I'm not even going to start on the value arguement. :)

and in regards to viruses and crap ya its true that PCs can be more of a pain but if you are smart its VERY easy to avoid. and you mac people should stay on your toes, since the new MacBook Pro release the mac viruses are starting to pop up and they will continue to become more prevelent.

Hey guys, thanks for the responses. Here's the specs on the iMac I recieved.

$1,299.00

17-inch widescreen LCD with 1440x900 resolution

1.83GHz Intel Core Duo with 2MB shared L2 cache

512MB (single SO-DIMM) 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM

160GB Serial ATA hard drive

Slot-load 8x double-layer SuperDrive

ATI Radeon X1600 graphics with 128MB GDDR3 memory

Built-in AirPort Extreme and Bluetooth 2.0

I can't make up my mind at this point. It would be nice to have both types. There seems to be so much debate on which is better, that the only way to surely know is to play with it yourself and make your own opinion. I love the design of it, and it kinda makes you wonder why a PC company hasn't immolated it's form yet. It's basically an all in one unit with everything you need integrated into it. It even has a camera and mic located in the screen unit! Coolest looking desktop I've ever seen and saves a lot of space.

oh, didn't realize it was one of the brand new ones. I'd actually keep it and play with Apple Boot Camp and see how Windows runs on it. Be some fun messin with it.

Keep the iMac - you'll love it. Use it for surfing the net, photo-editing and making videos.

Don't tell me you don't have room for it....;)

Thanks Daniel, although I am still considering my options, I have had a bad motorcycle accident and medical bills are pretty steep . . .but then again . .I need aomething to do to entertain myself.

First of all, Congratz on winning a Mac.

I've used pc's, but the only computer I've bought have been Mac's. Most pc users that have seen or tried my iMac have been very impressed. I don't think Mac's are for everyone, it's not hard to work across platforms, but I think most people should just follow the herd.

I've been playing online Poker for about a year and I am considering buying a PC laptop just for poker. Most of the poker rooms are PC only, and all of the best tools are for PC. Aside from that I would never switch from Mac OS.

So it's new one - the kind you can attach to a wall like a flat-panel TV?
With a remote control?
Keep it - it makes a perfect home media center!
