Hey guys. I was just browsing through the Masters Of Defence home page and wondered... i never really heard anyone talk about them in here at all. Are there frequent problems with there knives or something? Was just wondering.

Any knives recommended from M.O.D.
Dieter's a bit expensive... what about the Lady Hawk?
(not intending on buying one, just wondering what you guys liked)

Also on a final note, can someone please tell me whats is up with sebenzas. I've heard of how they are great EDC's and everything but wouldn't any other knife fit the profile.

The MOD look is a little too tactical for me, and may be for some others. The handles on all the folders seem large-ish as well.

What's up with the Sebenza? Here we go again...... :)

Masters Of Defense are high quality, have excellant collaberations from the masters of defense (Keating, Janich, Ayoob, Boggs, Watson, Dieter), but are a bit small. I remember how excited I was when I first heard about them. The first pictures I saw were great, however, no scale to compare to. The first time I actually saw one in the flesh, I was disapointed. I have large hands, and they where dwarfed in comparison. If the blades were all an inch or so longer, I would probably have each and every one in my collection!
If I did recomend one, I would go for the Hornet by Mr. Keating, or the Trident by Jim Watson.
The Lady Hawk by Graciela Boggs certainly does conform to the hand, and would be very difficult to knock loose in a struggle situation. I personally like it, but as said before, I have big hands and it is the smallest of the bunch!
The Sebenza is simply awesome. If you have never had the honor of thumbing one open, and hearing that bank vault like lock snap shut, then your really missing out. Yes, they might be considered a bit pricey, but no detail has been over looked in the least, and they will last a very long time. Chris Reeve also takes care of the product he sells. He will recondition them for little to nothing, for the life of the knife. Not many other makers, manufacturers would do the same. Thanks :D

How small is small wire edge? I thought the handles seemed hefty cause of their appearance in photos, never seen in person. Are the handles more average, I imagined the knives larger overall. Maybe I should pay more attention to the specs. :D

MOD is coming out with a Dieter mark I and Mark II with a Damascus blade. Beyond that, they appear to be just spinning their wheels.....wolf

I own 2 benza's and the MOD DD Mk1.

MOD knives are exellent but perhaps slightly overpriced? Heck I don't know... The DD is a folding monster, amazingly well made and stronger than superman.

The Sebenza is just amazing full stop.:D

I have to agree that MOD knives are quite a bit smaller than expected. I have an MOD Trident and it's nowhere near the large tactical folder that I thought it would be when I ordered it. It's more like a small utility pocket knife in size. Other than size my only other gripe that I have with this brand is their insistence on printing the accomplishments and records of their designers all over the blades. My first impression after reading the bio on the blade of my Trident was to wonder if Chief Watson favored long walks on the beach at sunset......

As for the Sebenza question...I resisted them myself for quite awhile. I had a hard time believing they could be worth the price until I handled one. My daily carry since Blade Show West has been a large classic model and I've yet to find any fault with it.

MOD you mean those small overpriced knives? besides who in thier right mind would carry a knife for "master" of defense. I have several they are not EDC by any stretch of the imagination.

I find M.O.D. knives to be to chunky looking. They look well made, but if I want a tank of a knife I will get a Strider. Well made and well priced.

well, i have 2 razorbacks, and wasnt real happy w/the black coating on the blade - i griped about it on another thread, and darrel lewis em'd me, offered to recoat my blades for free, called me on the phone(?) to explain the process, wow,all this in about 48 hours, i've always liked the designs, but to me anyway, they look better w/black blades, and my probs w/the coating left me less than eager to purchase more, they are prretty high $$, but after this, i might! i think darrel will would be an excellent addition to MOD, w/his plating service, if MOD is 1/2 as enthusiastic as darrel, they will grow fast imho

I have been able to handle the entire line except for the cqd 2 and all the blades I saw were well made. The original cqd intrigued me with its secondary belt cutter blade, but the thing is simply too enormous and was ackward for me to use (esp being a lefty). If you are interested in it I would suggest holding one first prior to buying/ordering one.

The one real negative I saw was all that writing on the blade!!!

I have a Trident. I rotate it in with other knives as an EDC. I love it! Personally, I don't think it's too small - for comparison, it's only about 1/4" shorter than the Emerson SOCFK, and the same size as the Kershaw-Onion Boa.

It's built like a tank, and has the same fit and "feel" as Microtech.

I got the Trident specifically because it was designed by Chief Watson. And, at NO time was I interested if he liked sunset walks on the beach.

I'm fortunate enough to have a wife that deals in 'em. I have a CQD auto (the big one) a Hornet and a Razorback. The CQD is HUGE :D I've carried it in everyday clothes a few times but plan on keeping it mainly as a work only knife. The Razorback is perfect - not too big nor too small. Just enough curve to the blade to make it a good cutter and a super penatrating point (Hey Normark - I need 2 additional sheathes for that knife, we need to talk). My Razorback is way fun, flicks open faster than most autos (but I still want an auto one) and is the perfect size for everyday use. I think the fit and finish of them all is superb.

I do wish I could get them without all the writing on the blades. I could live without a writeup and a bio on my knives  Oh well.

They work great and really hold an edge, and they do what I want 'em to do. We thought that they were expensive, and advertised reduced prices - until we were "chided" by MOD, so now prices upon request (No MOD price spies please :) )

Have fun out there!

Dan

BTW - have a manual CQD MKII manual with a black partially serrated blade, and auto CQD with the strap cutter and a manual CQD with the glassbreaker and strap cutter on sale :D

Hi there Javahead,

Does M.O.D. have a folding version of the Ayoob Razorback? I thought that was the only non-folder of the bunch. Earlier I stated they were small, once again, I have big hands. They probably aren't that small for everyone. However, they seemed a lot smaller than the popular knives at the time. Also, they do feel somewhat like Microtechs, because they nearly are. I believe most of the machining was done at the Verro Beach shop when they started out, several years ago.

Howdy Wire Edge,

Mod makes 3 fixed blades:

The Mark V CQD ATAC

The Razorback no folding version.

Some new ones are....

the DAMASTEEL Dieter CQD

Fully automatic, a limited number of Damascus bladed automatics are available. They include the carbide window breaker and Sandvik Steel gather and cut support blade in the hilt.

CQD Limited Edition
20.jpg

It features the gather and cut capabilities of the support blade, the carbide emergency window breaker, a ribbed thumb stud for greater contact when opening with the thumb, a waffled locking button face for tactile feel in the dark, and a deluxe kydex molded sheath. Other than a serial number, the blades are "military sterile" (HOORAY :D) without any identifying markings. The CQD LE also has a sharpened top edge extending 1.75 inches up the blade.

For big hands - I'd definatly recommend the full sized CQD.

Have fun!

Dan

Does the CQD Limited Edition come in full size or small size? How much is it? Does it come in plain edge? Is it manual or auto?

A folding razorback? They "might" have been a little more useful for a LEO if they DID fold, but as your wife IS a dealer, could you get me a couple of FOLDING Razorbacks..;) MOD makes a decent knife but they are just too small, and have way too much propaganda written on the blade for my tastes. the sterile LE edition is better, but the price difference is ridiculous.....wolf

This is speculation (we called and asked about such a blade a few weeks ago and MOD said they had nothing like this - then KAZAM - here it is. communications seem a bit off  From what I can see, it looks like a combo edge only deal. From the "suggested retail" of $379.95  I sure hope it's auto, but their online description talks about "when opening with the thumb" so I'm not sure. I can't see paying that much for a manual, heck the suggested retails of MOD knives are a bit excessive.

That is a neat idea. I've been toying around with the idea of taking my handles off and wrapping the tang with 550 cord - just for something different.

I like the sizes (but at 5'10, 185 I guess I'm average sized) for big hands - I'd go with that full sized CQD. Yes, the writing is a bit much, I wish they all came with the sterile option. As for the prices - I could never, in good conscience, charge someone the "suggested" retail price on any of the knives :)

Sorry I couldn't do a better job answering the questions.

Dan
