Don't judge a knife dude by his cover-lesson learned

I've met more scoundrels in suits then I have people wearing beat up t-shirts and jeans.

If you dont mind me asking, how does this work? Two strangers "took" you around town

In a car? On bus? Walking?

Something seems strange here..

Gosh Bladeforums has become the skeptics capital of the internet. Can't even say what you had for dinner with out someone finding something fishy about it. Who cares how he was 'taken around town' dudes ended up being way cool and strider carriers to boot.

...2 locals. Dreadlocks down to their knees. Baggy clothing, and a bit messy.

Sorry but I can't help but hear a Rastafarian accent when I picture this encounter. "Ey, mon, whatchu tink about my Stridah, mon?" :D (No offense!)

Just curious how this all unfolded. It's not too often you hear about someone insulting 2 strangers than being "taken around town" by them shortly after.

I'm calm, and being curious for more details is fine but when you phrase it "something seems strange here..", there's an insinuation that accompanies it, rather than simply inquiring about the details

From now on every time I see 2 men together I'm going to be all like "since you two are gay", and when they explain "we're brothers, we're friends, we're ex WWF tag team champions Legion of Doom, etc." I'll just be like "suuuure you are.. ;) your secret is safe with me, I won't judge". It's always more fun when people fit yor preconceived notion, even if it's not true

Well, to be fair, 2 Strider carrying rasta's one just met and insulted, in what seems to be in a sketchy part a town, far from one's own home, brings to mind several questions. I may be 6'2" and 180 lbs of pistol packing romp and stomp, but I have to admit, the OP has more huevos rancheros then I'll ever have; and I don't fear anything.;)

I also had a guy surprise me when he pulled out his strider. Then upon closer inspection, I realized that it was a knockoff :p

I agree. I see people anxious to zip up their "flame suits" in threads everywhere. In turn, people with serious questions unanswered and themselves alienated, legitimate discussions turned to petty arguments over topics I've seen argued about to the same extent.
Wayyyyy more in other threads but I didn't want to bring it up but I'll support kniferbro in what he is saying.

I think this was a fine story....besides we ALL carry knives it's not like we are in grade school walking home talking to the candy man in the white van...

I'm glad you learned an important lesson and was also able to experience a fantastic time with the two men you misjudged. The fact that they carry matching striders really ices the cake.

Thank you for sharing :)

No problem, I understand how it sounded, but I was safe the entire time. We walked around a historical district that had probably 2 thousand people in the streets with us. I would have never gotten in a car or went anywhere that seemed like I would be alone. As far as insulting them, these guys were so used to it that they educated me instead of being angry. They were the type of hippies that you don't come across anymore.

Ya' know, there are pan-handlers out there with cardboard signs asking for handouts that actually make $30-40-50K per year doing that... and that's on top of their regular day job!

That does it! From now on, I'm going to insist on seeing their last year's 1040 tax statement! :)

My grandpa was a NY taxi driver. One day in his cab he points out a man with no legs begging. He is on one of those boards with wheels like the frogs in Mad Magazine. My grandpa told me one day it was pouring rain and he offered the guy a ride. He declined. A few minutes later an expensive car service picked him up. Over time, my grandpa realized this beggar had a car service deliver him and pick him up for work every day. It was a job.

Only notable knife encounter I've seen so far was a guy at the supermarket with a ZT0301 in his backpocket. I didn't approach him about it though.

I'm curious though
We started talking, and I immediately appologized for judging him. He and his brother took me around the town, and showed me the great spots on the main square that a tourist would have never seen. Inside a really cool bar, I asked him what blade he was carrying, and he and his brother pull out fricking matching Striders! Man were they sweet, green G10, anodized titanium, smooth as can be! The frame lock was like butter.

How did the conversation arrive at knives/EDC?

Saw it clipped on his pocket, and had to ask :).

davek14, that's them!!! Just kidding, they were dudes, and those are dudettes.

I went out of town, doesn't matter where, this could happen anytime and anywhere. I had never been to this place before, and met 2 locals. Dreadlocks down to their knees. Baggy clothing, and a bit messy. They were hanging out where the homeless were. They came up to me and started talking. I said something like, "yeah and since you're homeless.....". Guy stops me right there, and said that he's not homeless, but comes down to help the homeless every weekend. He brings them food and any money he can to help them out. He's an artist, and makes a great living at it, six figures yearly.

These two guys were amazing to me and they didn't have to be. They laughed when they saw what a blade geek I was and how I reacted to what they were carrying. They were probably 2 of the nicest people I have ever met. And I judged them, where I learned an important lesson that it's not what's on the outside that counts!
Nice...come on thou, not baggy clothes...id be more worried about the homo thugs rocking skinny jeans!

^ My new Buck 110, as I looked embarrased as mine was 30 bucks, and they had 500 dollar pieces in front of me. They were kind and stated that Buck knives are great (they are).
