Dont laugh... its my first time.. customizing knives.

The only possibility I can think of is the pin mount might be compromised. You might want to check it with the lockbar removed, if the stop pin or the lockbar pivot pin moves/rattles.

I will look into it. Thanks for the suggestion.

I hope you used a respirator when grinding the G 10!

I most definitely did, i had a respirator on with a heavy bandana on over it.

Good job for the first time.!

Thanks man! Don’t worry though, I will still be sending my other knives to you in the meantime :)

Okay guys, heres the finished product. I finally found some time to do some acid etching and i’m actually quite pleased with the results. I only did the blade for now, but i’m considering doing up the lock bar and pocket clip to match.

First, I cleaned the blade really well and scrubbed all the dirt and skin oils off. To avoid finger printing and getting the blade dirty again i put on latex gloves.

Once it was clean and dry, I painted on a random pattern using a nice manly color of nail polish. I didnt pay much attention to detail on this one, being that the knife is basically scrap now. So it was just a test to see what would happen. I used two different patterns to see what one i like better for future projects.

(TIPS: If you want to speed up this process, use a hair dryer to dry the nail polish faster)

Now its off to the acid bath. I went to my local hardware store and picked up a bottle of Muriatic Acid.
Got the knife set up in a small plastic jar and let it sit in the acid for a half hour. The steel darkened pretty well after the first 15 minutes, but i left it in an extra 15 minutes just to let it dig in a bit more.

I took it inside at this point and cleaned the remaining acid off with a bunch of soap and water and a good nylon bristle brush. Then it was off to get the nail polish removed....

Here is the finished product.

For being the first time I have ever done anything like this, i thought it turned out pretty nice.

NEXT: I am going to try to do a home-brew stonewash :)

Take it one step further and buff the scales or use a light coating of 3-in1 oil or even WD-40. Doing that will really bring out the deep color of the G10 and it won't look so "chalky". Overall good job and congrats on taking the plunge on your first customization.

Also, get yourself a bottle of Ferric Chloride (aka PCB Etchant) from Radio Shack for around $12. You'll get the same if not better results when etching in a fraction of the time, usually in less than a minute.

Thanks for the tip man, that was next on my list.

Any tips out there for how to do a nice stonewash using household items? (A.K.A anything but an actual stonewash/tumbling machine)

Before investing in a tumbler, I would drop the blade in a old Gatorade bottle that was a quarter filled with small river rock and a squirt of WD-40. I would then wrap it in a towel with duct tape and pop it in the dryer for about 2 hours. It worked pretty good. This method actually yielded better results than my tumbler when I wanted a more aggressive stonewash finish. I use the tumbler for a smoother kind of polished stonewash.

I tried looking for that stuff at my local stores, but had no luck. It looks like i’ll have to buy some online. Thats why i went with the muriatic acid... only stuff i could find around here.

Have you found out the cause of blade play?

PS: nice acid bath work!

That problem has still been baffling me. I checked everything internally, and everything seems normal...

It is really baffling! Perhaps try removing one side of the scale and lock open and rock the blade to see which part of the components causing this?

I don't mean to press you to this, but am really intrigued. The design supposedly be foolproof
