Don't Mess With Something That Ain't Broke! (o-t)

Oh and let me take this opportunity to make some pre-emptive apologies to Guy and Craig. I hate politics, I really do. I really hate discussing them. I only wrote this thread to liven things up a little here. Shoptalk has been in the summertime slump and quite frankly, a little boring. I just felt the need to help liven it up. No offense intended to you two fine gentlemen or your political views. This goes for anyone else who may read the above thread and feel angered by my "red-necked-ness" concerning this election.

Peace above all! :D

Hey Jeff, no need to apologize as no offense was taken, I hope none was given on my part. I do believe we are all friends here as you do, despite any political differences we all have. You may have noticed I took the oppurtunity to voice my opinion on the subject as well and I certainly wasn't attempting to police the forum and I'm sorry it sounded like I was. I'm not happy about our choices either way this year just like you, I just refuse to vote for the Bush clan again. You have a valid point as well because I think that most of us here seldom visit the other forums so this venue is the place we mostly interact. I firmly believe radicals either to the left or the right should be avoided like the plague!

I have always appreciated the fact that the "forum policing" that goes on in other knife forums is avoided here by placing the "OT" designation before a new thread that is intended for the knifemakers' community regardless of the fact it may not necessarily contain shop content.

When someone seeking shop talk sees the "OT" and isn't interested in off topic info, they're not under any obligation to read. If this presents some type of real problem, I'd be truly appreciative if someone could give a reasonable explanation why.

I can't see the harm in a knifemaker writing about politics, their new kitty, getting married, or a special anniversary to his fellow makers here on this forum. As a matter of fact, I enjoy it very much. Being pretty much a shut-in, this is my way of getting some social contact and enjoying the OTHER ASPECTS of those folks who share the same passion I do for making knives. That's just my personal opinion, but I'd be very sad to see it have to change here the way it's changed elsewhere for the worse.

Mike, my initial response to this thread was that it shouldn't be here, the old never discuss politics or religion with friends or family deal, but when I started thinking about it I changed my mind a bit. This forum has had blissfully few problems over the years, quite possibly because we do all frequent this forum as a place to be among friends. I believe we have all posted OT threads here, lord knows I have a time or two, still I'm sure Spark wouldn't want to see every other thread here as an off topic flame war over religion or politics, but given the caliber of people here I find that unlikely to happen. So I'd have to say while I understand both Craig's and my initial response, I couldn't agree more with your assessment. People do however get extremely touchy over a few topics and it certainly doesn't hurt to temper what we post with a bit of prudence. I can't tell you how many responses to various threads I've typed up and then deleted because after a little thought I really couldn't determine what good my 2 cents was adding. Hell, anyway I like Herman Munster and now I'll always think of Kerry when I see him! :D

if this don't up set the apple cart

hey vote for me ahhh dang since you have to have money to run now that puts me out..
if Kerry could stay with one idea and not change his mind more than he does his underwear
it would be a great help. Catch-up anyone.. :barf:

it's just wrong that we have just what's in front of us to vote for, we should not have to vote for Evil at all. :grumpy:
Kerry said he would pull us out of war if voted in and put the money saved by the cuts ,into the eco sty then says we don't have enough
troops over there ??
just wait till we only have J Jackson and the 700 club wonder butting head for it,
and Hillary goes independent who do you think would win?? fear factor 100%

Guy, I agree with you, too, that there are topics that can lead to some bad feelings. I tend to avoid them too. I'm getting pretty old, too, and don't give out choices for candidates; you'll notice I was more complaining about poor choices in general, and the ability to say "No" to both.

To be honest, my response resulted because of a thread on another forum that hurt no one, but a self important knife dealer insisted on making an issue where none need be made. It upset me, and I lost a little interest in the forum as a consequence. I was just over reacting because we seem a bit more free-wheeling here and I didn't want that to happen again. No offense intended.

I assume Kevin will definitely tell us when we have crossed the line. :)

Take care.

Mike I agree
My point was simple..
it's to bad, what all we have to vote for is the only ones willing to run
and has money to do so.. it's very sad to me..

Dan, you and I are certainly on the same page.

I deeply distrust anyone who thinks they are "qualified" to make decisions in the best interests of 330 million people. As I stated earlier, two poor choices does nothing good for us.

I think we ought to run a couple of knife makers for the Oval Office. Then, we would have some good candidates to vote for. Right now, it's just guessing which one is the lesser of the evils for the two that are running.
