Don't (totally) Change the NEW Manix! (Please?)

I read somewhere on here of the changes that are coming to the NEW Manix. Now, some of the changes are cool - I am ok with that...but the one change ("The Manix will be Lighter") I say please, NO GO. To me, Spyderco has so many light folders to choose from...why add another to the lineup? Let the Manix be different in that it is SOLID! A BEAST! A Knife not to be messed with or confused with any other! I mean, I can't speak for the initial sales of the Manix - but I must say since it's been discontinued, its' one of the most soft after knives (IMHO) Spyderco has right now...so why change a good thing? Sure, make improvements or tweaks - but lets keep the weight a Manix exclusive!

So voice your opinion - and if you agree with me, add your voice to mine so we can make a new version of a classic knife that much better if the powers that be read these posts and listen to what we like and don't like! (I should have been in politics ehehhe):D

I'm still deciding if I'm even interested in the ball lock. I haven't used the Spyderco Ball Lock personally but I realy like the Manix with the back lock a lot. That's why I have four now ;)

I would only like to see a lighter Manix if it was proven it was as tough as the last one.
And will the Tuff ever come out?.
Also the CR Sage looks perfect IMO wonder when thats out.

just scored 2 more full ones this last week! (both green):D

now i got 5 like jill!!!:D

time to drink!

ps-i will probably get a manix2 to compare and try out bb lock.

I'm with you wavester.. Manix is a beast and should remain that way..When it first came out no one liked it.. But today it the most wanted spydie out there... Keep it solid I say..

I wasn't interested in the Manix BECAUSE of it's weight. I will probably pick up the new one. I'm interested in the lock and strength anyhow

The ball lock is extremely smooth and strong, stronger than the backlock on my Manix if it is put in a somewhat beefy handle I would think. The weight of the Manix doesn't bother me either, but if it can be just as strong if not stronger than the original while being lighter it will probably appeal to more people. I'd love to see it in CPM D2 or CPM M4, as both of those steels impress me with their edge qualities and edge retention, while being tougher than S30V.

I might get one if it is light enough. The weight of the handle doesn't affect how easily a tip can be snapped off, my concerns for knife durability seem off-kilter or something.

I would think the designer of the original will be able to make an improved version that will be pleasing to most users.

I would think just the change in the lock system will yield a lighter model, although I bet some of the lessons learned in the last few years will be incorporated to further lessen the weight without any compromises in strength.

I, for one, do not measure the value of a blade based on how far below my knees it drags my pants. :D

isn't the lockback one of the more heavier locking mechanisms? If so, maybe the reduced weight is simply from the lock change. You wouldnt want them to add weight if that is the case right?

I'm fine with the Manix 2 being lighter, but that's because there is a good chance we'll get a bigger one down the road.
The Popa Manix should be a real beast.

I agree with OP - Manix is the tree-feller spyderco. Should still have the thick steel liners, but I like ball-lock upgrade plan. Also, maybe 4 1/8" blade, FFG leaf? would be mighty fine...

I love the Manix because it is a beast that outcuts any other big folder I've had. The lockback is plenty strong. A small Manix is not a Manix. Call it a Boyix.

While I love my Manix, the weight and width( from spine to handle) is what keeps it out my pockets. 6oz is very heavy for a folder, comparabe to the keltek p32 pistol. Its as much as a Millie and a Salt combined, or a Pac Salt and a Spydersaw, or 3 Delica 3's!

I look forward to a leaner and meaner manix 2.

I did not get the original Manix because of its bulk / weight and because I already had a folder that was "heavy-duty" enough for most knife chores I encounter routinely - my paramil. I don't think the value of a folder should be based on its weight (not saying anyone is saying that, but I focus on performance, and the traits needed to get that performance).

If I carry something heavy or bulky, I'll be a fixed blade. Stronger than a folder by weight, if somewhat longer in length. Awkwardness of carry may be a wash (but I have some very pocket-able fixed blades).

For me the big advantage of a folder is convenience of carry, particularly EDC. This may be heretical, but if I need something capable of extreme heavy duty, it'll be a fixed blade. If I can get extra heavy duty in a package that is folder-convenient, I'll buy one. Maybe the Manix 2 will fit that bill.

TEHO ;)

If my memory doesn't fail me, Eric said that the blade will be 3,5 mm thick (compared to 4 in the orig. Manix). Not that big a deal. And the fact that the locking mechanism is a little lighter doesn't bother me at all.

My hands arent small (lg or xlrg gloves) but my manix jr is bulky to me. I cant just fling it into different grips like I can with my caly jr. That said ill still prolly buy the new model.
