Don't we need a Spyderco FAQ?

A good question arose in one of the recent threads about the existence of a Spyderco FAQ. As far as I know there is no such document in existence, and the Spyderco thread on BF (and the Spyderco booklets that comes with every knife) caters for this to some extent in the meantime.

I am currently working on a personal Spydie-dedicated website (as well as the Spydie desktop themes). If a Spyderco FAQ is really needed (and I think it is!), I would be willing to start putting one together. Alternatively, Spyderco can do it themselves -> Sal/Danelle?... We FREQUENTLY have the same questions popping up here on the BF Spyderco threads, and that is by definition the purpose of a FAQ.

I (for one) would like to have all Spydie information together in one document, that can be expanded as questions arise...

Any other views? Will there be interest in such a FAQ?

For more general info regarding FAQs, what they are, etc. you can visit: http://www.faqs.org/faqs/faqs/about-faqs/

MDP,
I KNEW I'd lure YOU in here!

Let's just wait to hear Spyderco's view on the subject. They MIGHT want to get involved in the venture... I'd like to incorporate any ideas they might have, after all we are ranting about THEIR products!

If not, we are free to do our own thing!

I thought of going through all BF posts, and categorise them under specific questions. Can you even REMEMBER how often we had questions posted here on plain vs. serrated blades (covered in Joe Talmadge's FAQ here on BF, but we can refer to it!

), on Sharpmaker operation, on materials used in the Spyderco product line, on Spyderco's sharpening processes, etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. (you get the point! - no pun intended...

)

I am QUITE SURE that Sal/Danelle/team will welcome the ability to just point some questions to the FAQ, instead of answering the S.O.S. (uhmmmm... Same Old Stuff?
wink.gif
) over and over again!

MDP,
please EMAIL me at heynsv@liw.denel.co.za if you are willing to help with the FAQ. I am a bit short of time at the moment (yeah, I know I say that EVERY time!

), but it WOULD be VERY helpful if you could start archiving the BF threads in the meantime...

Heyns - We have a FAQ on the Spyderco website, though it may not contain as much info as you might like to have available. That is why I'm trying to moderate the forum. Heck, it's taken more tha 9,000 posts to answer the questions here on the forum.

A source for the answers to all questions would be nice, but large. Many would prefer to just ask on the forum.

The forumites have been quite excellent in asnswering questions, both with knowledge and style. This has value when it comes from ELU and not the factory. Some thoughts to share.

Hi HvdM!
I think you are right. An extensive FAQ about Spyderco and their products is exactly what I need.
I learned only on friday about a different kind of clip on an delica. (the wider zytel).
I mean I know Spyderco for about ten years and have not recogniced this.
I think this FAQ should be outside of spyderco. Some kind of a non official spyder-page. I do not want to offend someone.
Greetings

Sal,
I can see your point (
wink.gif
) about being there to moderate the forums... It SURE is nice to get first-hand answers. However, I STILL think that extracts of the BF threads will make a nice FAQ, especially because YOU and your crew were directly involved in supplying the answers to the pertinent questions. This FAQ will have to be updated on a regular basis, to reflect what's being asked (and answered) on BF.

Red Mag,
I am busy with just such a site! Keep your eyes open, it should be done SOON!

It will also host the above-mentioned FAQ, in various formats (online search, downloadable text-format, etc...)

Heyns - I agree that there is more information that has been shared on this forum than any where else. This info would surely provide the basis for a good FAQ.

Sorting and filing, editing and updating might be a full time job?

We are building an "answer book" at Spyderco that could also help, but not the sorting and filing. I'll run it by the Spyderco management and see what glitches they can see.

Sal,
I know it might take A LOT of time (especially at first). However, once one has the 'basic' FAQ, regular updating can be done, where the MTBU ("Mean Time Between Updates"
wink.gif
) is defined by the administrator. I will be MORE than happy to do this, as I would like to have an extract of the BF threads (and the wealth of information contained therein) anyway.

I have already started an outline of the FAQ, and so far what has developed is history stuff and requires your words Sal.

Beyond that it is extracts, as I see it.

And some design philosophy issues.
