Joe,
I came up with a burgandy micarta 500 with the block letter tang stamp. This one has the two dots, one before and one after the 500 model number.
I think these were manufactured in 1984 or 1985. Do you know if the two dots are meaningful and whether any other 500 series models also have the dot preceding and following the model Number?

Hi Larry, I have made a few notes on this subject and have the following:
78-80 2 dots= Change tang shape
80-82 3 dots= Bushing added to pivot pin
82-85 4 dots= 440C to 425M steel
c. 94 switch from 425M to 420HC steel
I got this because of my interest in the model 110 and 112. I have a few of these knives with dots. I'm guessing it would hold true for the model 500. Date codes started in 86 with the <. You can find a lot of good stuff on the Tech FAQs. Hope this helps. Ev.

Ev,
The 500 series with dots before and after the model # are a whole different issue than what you referenced about the 110 and 112 models. Thanks, however, for your effort!

Larry,
I think i may have found some useful info in regards to those dots. I have an old blueprint which shows a generic blade stamp with dots on either side. THe note says that stamps showing one or more dots are for fineblanked parts only. It also mentioned that the dots were removed in 11/85, obviosly because we then switched to the present date codes.
Why one will have two dots and one will have one dot is unknown today.

Joe,
Thanks for the info. I think that would be an interesting "tidbit" for the club newsletter. Does the dot indicating that the blade was fineblanked hold true on the Bucklite knives from the same era?

As I recall, the first dot was for the switch to fine blanking and the second was added for the change to 425M. We had trouble with 440C sticking and the 425M proved much better for the fine blanking dies. Greg would probably be able to verify this and I'll bet Chuck will remember if you put it that way.
