I got a double bit Collins Axe head at a tag sale for a buck. There was a bit old sticker left that said "Homestead" or "Homesteader." Cleaned up pretty nice. My question is about sharpening. I noticed that one side and edge profile is thinner than the other side. Ive never used a double bit so I assume one side is sharpened different than the other.-----How is each side sharpened and what are they used for?--Thanx--KV
some good info here, this is the part on sharpening but read the whole document great stuff, for the most part one side is thin for felling and pulp wood and the otherside is a little thicker for knots, close to the ground work or anything were you feel you might damage your good edge.
Nice find. I restored one that had the original handle on it. I think mine is called a cruiser double bit axe. Some what of a thin delicate handle with beautiful lines. About the size of a youth axe but a double bit. I need to make a sheath for it. I'm still thinking about that one. Had to run out to the garage to see it. I couldn't find anything about it other that Homestead was in the metal. No maker.
