Double Cut Camp Tramp...What's it Worth

Okay guys I need your help. After trying to find and buy my first Swamp Rat Knife for almost six months I finally had a great chance fall in my lap right in my own home town. I was called in and offered a chance to look at and make a bid on some guns by a local family here in town that will soon be having an estate sale for a recently deseased uncle's remaining property. While I was there looking at the guns one of the family members asked me if I would be interested in looking at a "big knife", so naturally I said yes. What she produced was a still new in the box and unused Double Cut Camp Tramp. They are offering it to me for the amount he had it insured for ($250). I am still learning about these knives and had never heard of a double cut Camp Tramp. Is it worth the $250? If not what is is worth? Were there a bunch of these made? I would really like to have a Tan/Tan Camp Tramp and I have been hoping I would stumble upon one but if this knife is in the money I may buy it and trade it or just hang on to it. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

I'll trade my tan/tan CT with a Spec Ops sheath for this knife, straight across.

I've never heard of this one either, but it sounds like a good deal.

Thanks for the offer David, who knows what will happen. I would like to have a tan/tan Camp Tramp. I do not know if this particular Double Cut Camp Tramp is worth any more than a regular Camp Tramp or not, but I want to get a decent idea of what it's worth before I make any deals. If your tan/tan Camp Tramp is in mint condition I will give you first shot on a trade deal if I decide to trade it since you offered first.

The D/C Camp Tramps are indeed very rare. Nobody who has the actual numbers will ever let out how many were released to the public, but I believe they are much harder to come by than a tan/tan CT.

If it is a true d/c from SRKW, I believe it will have a black handle. There may be more to it as well, but only Eric I. would be able to help with that. I do know some CTs have been stripped by their owners and given a d/c finish. I actually have a tan/tan CT that a previous owner did this exact thing to--he sent it in to SRKW and they did the work for him. Of course, as I say, it has a tan handle.

So your dilemma is this--if it is an original d/c, it will be worth more unused and in mint shape than if you use it. It really is a collector's item, and if it were me, I would hesitate to use it. BUT, that being said, if what you really wanted was a user, then it doesn't really do you much good sitting in your sock drawer. In that case, since I would not want to use her, I would turn around and trade her to someone for a great user, or sell her straight out to a collector who wants a pristine d/c CT.

There's my .02. Hope it helps.

The knife is an original Double Cut Camp Tramp as I can verify that by the the paperwork(ticket & receipt) that came with it. It is just how he received it. He simply put it in his gun safe with a few other knives and several fine 1911s. I can certainly afford to buy the knife and hang on to it as a collector piece if it is indeed worth something, eventhough I have been looking for a tan/tan Camp Tramp to use. I just like the way the tan/tan Camp Tramps look and have been wanting to pick up a couple of them as well as the Scrapyard knives since I found out about them and the amount of performance per dollar associated with them. I collect firearms,(mainly 1911s) not knives generally, but I wont pass on a good deal. The only reason I haven't bought a Swamp Rat or Scrapyard knife yet is that I actually work and don't have a hundred hours a week to sit in front of a computer and be one of the few lucky ones that happens to be online in the proper chat room or internet forum when they become available. Add to that, that it would just make me sick to then have to pay one of those people who happened to be online at the right time twice as much as they paid for a chance to own a knife that I am going to use and abuse. As I have found most of the individuals that buy these knives buy several at a time, one of each model they want and then a few more of each to get them all bought up so that they can then turn a handsome profit by selling them at the sometimes ridiculous inflated prices some of these knives bring. It is a pretty good plan actually, and it helps a lot of people be able to afford a hobby they might not be able to otherwise. Anyway, I know if I keep checking in on the websites they will someday release a knife that I like maybe as well as the Camp Tramp and hopefully I will be in the right place at the right time, until then I think I am going to go ahead and buy this Double Cut CT as I have been seeing regular CTs go for $210-230 around here. Still though, if anybody has a good idea of what this thing might be worth, or even a ballpark estimate, please let me know. Thanks.

The CT had an original price of $128.95 plus shipping, the desert CT was $138.95 plus shipping. I woud e-mail Eric I. and ask him what the d/c CTs originally went for. I have never seen one sold, so trying to put a price on it is like shooting in the dark.

If you have no luck with finding an original price or a current value, I would just pick a value that makes you happy. Whatever amount you decide it will take to make you happy, I am pretty sure that you will be able to get your $ out of it. After that, it is really up to you. Good luck! She is certainly a nice blade!

The DC CT's were never made with any regularity, they were not ever a full production piece. They are much more rare than the tan CT's.

The cost of them was the regular price, plus a lot of begging and usually a very nice bribe of alcohol to the Custom shop ;)

I hope that helps

Sounds like you found a nice treasure

:D:D

Your going to be in the $250 ++ plus range easily on a mint Tan/Tan Camp Tramp if you find one.

I've got 4 CT's and you can never go wrong with any version of them. Not really sure what the DC would be worth, but it would be very attractive to Swamp Rat/CT collectors.

The DC Tramp would be a nice one to have , but I definitely wouldn't use her. You'll need a user also if you get the DC Tramp.

Just my thoughts.

Good luck .... sounds like you found a nice little gem !

Thanks guys. I bought the knife this morning and wound up paying $220 for it so I feel good about the purchase along with the purchase of six 1911s I also picked up from this family. I will be pouring a drink for this fallen friend whom I never met later on this evening and setting it in a special place on the bar where we go after shooting on Saturday afternoons. He had great taste in guns, and it looks like he had great tastes in knives too.

Nice scoop on the CT. I remember when they were offered and IIRC they were over $200 from the shop.

Never bothered to try for one because I never considered the Rats to be safe Queens. Busse for sure, but not the Rats. Times do change. LOL

NOW, tell us about those 1911's! 6?!?!!!!

You really know how to hurt a JMB fan.

Rob,
Are you sure that you are thinking of the DC Camp Tramp. IIRC, we never publicly offered a DC CT, we did offer a Satin Battle Rat and there are a few DC Ratweilers floating around but I don't recall offering a DC CT.

Of course I could easily be wrong on this.

Either way it is a great grab by Tolly

yup, quite a find. the only one i have ever seen is the one i sent to the shop and had cleaned up, sharpened, then blasted.

Those you better damn well use!:D

The Lwt CCO will be carried some in a Tucker HS1 after it has been given a once over by Virgil Tripp, and I will also shoot the Les Baer and at least one of the series 70 repros. The Gold Cup Delta will not be fired.
