Double disk sander?

I have a 2hp Baldor with a VFD, and I was thinking about making a belt driven double disk grinder with it.

What size discs would be best? Are there any different types of abrasive disks than PSA that are flat?

Does anyone have anything similar?

Does this sound like a good idea?

I meant to build something like this once when I had a line on a big twin arbor large format motor, like the type you see on large pedestal grinders, but I snoozed and missed out on the motor.

With a single shaft motor you'll just need to use a belt and pullied to a long keyed shaft and pillow blocks. No reason it wouldn't work or even be hard to build.

Most of us use and recommend the 9" discs like Tracy at USA knifemaker or Rob at Beumont carry. That allows you to use psa discs OR cut standard sized sheets to size, which is convenient.

8 7/8" discs are best. That leaves 1/16" on each side of a 9" piece of paper to get it lined up.

9 inch will work . Adhesive stick on and trim the outside to fit disc.
I have 1/8 rubber on one side and straight to disc on the other.

Thank you all very much for your time. You have given me something to go on.

I don't understand the tiny 9" disk, but apparently that's all a guy needs? I mean I have plenty of power to turn bigger discs, and was kind of thinking the bigger the better, but I know you guys know a lot more about it than I do.

There are specialty 9" discs that you guys like. Are there any like that but bigger?

There are 12", 14" discs, etc that are common but the problem becomes being somewhat limited to psa discs at that point. Less selection and higher prices.

If you're sanding wood, abrasives last forever and larger discs make more sense, but metal is an all together different story.

If you use a 9" disc you can use 9" x 11" sandpaper. Use contact adhesive to attach the paper and trim off the extra with a knife (if you have one laying around:D).

Here's some photos of my double disc. Just to give you some ideas.

Wow! Thanks for all the input, and especially the pics, Charles!

Y'all have convinced me, I guess a 9" it will be. I would not have known that, that's for sure.

I was thinking that I would use them for roughing in FFGs, and maybe finishing some with it. Are you guys saying you can do a 9" knife on a 9" disk? I was thinking you would use half the disc, especially finishing them, but I can see how you can still finish a blade normally.

Thanks again!

You could likely do a 9" knife on a 1" disc. You're not limited by disc size really, and like many things related to working steel, less active surface area of contact is often advantageous. 9" strikes a nice balance, with some perks.

Charles if the disc is not VS do you find around 800rpm,s to be close to ideal? If I had to
pick an all around speed that would be it for clean cut without too much heat.
Ken.

Ken,

I think you are right. My set-up is running at about 850 rpm and I wouldn't want it running faster, a little slower would be nice.

Take care

Charles
