Trying to make a little double edge bootknife for a buddy in Baghdad. I have an 8" contact wheel on a Grizzly grinder. The stock is 1" wide and 1/4" thick. When I get the center lines even there is a ridge before the edge. I can't seem to get a smooth grind from center line to edge. Should I just flatgrind it? Thank all.

A smaller wheel would make things easier for you with that narrow of blade. l sometimes spray the blade with that blue layout fluid and grind a pass or two and look to see where the belt is really cutting. Flat grinding a double edge is more difficult in my opinion.

More pressure towards the edge to thin the edge a bit, then work back towards the centerline? This would create a deeper grind with a thinner cross section where the secondary bevel would be. Kinda hard to tell without seeing the knife and your grinding technique.

Change the vertical angle of your blade a little towards the edge and make a pass or two and check where it's grinding. Keep at it and have fun!

Yep, roll it in toward the edge. Many think that hollow grinding is just a matter of letting the wheel do all the cutting, and the diameter of the wheel is the depth of the cut. Nothing could be further from the truth. It is a point of learning to carve the steel in the depth, and direction you want with the wheel. This is done by both rotating the steel in and out for the width, and tip up and down for blending. You can do a lot with a wheel. Up to and including flat grinding and distal tapering. Simple flat grinding is so much more limiting. You will be amazed what you can do as you gain experience. Mike

Wow! Working from the edge and rolling the work in made all the difference. I can see where a 3" wheel would be nice. Thanks guys for all the help. I will post it when I'm done.
