I suspect a software update incompatibility glitch.
When everything on a computer is working just fine (or nearly so), and BOOM, something starts freaking out/acting up/crashing/etc, it's usually a sw glitch.
When sw developers test new code modules, they are generally working with a system that is fairly clean, w/ respect to drivers and sw installed. in the real world, users have all kinds of "stuff" running on their systems. And with the right "bug" in the new sw, the issue will only occur when the right combination of sw and hw is present AND running.
I used to have a job where I would have to take systems that were having issues similar to what we are seeing here (and worse). AFTER I tracked down the culprits, we then would have to convince the two parties that a) there was a problem, b) their stuff was causing it and c) they needed to fix it because d) changing the hw wasn't gonna work.
So don't expect a quick fix.
