Double-sided stones with Hapstone R2

Thank you for the quick reply I appreciate your help. When you say lite clamps are they also known as the option clamps? Both of them will work with fill flat grinds?

The "Opti" clamps are different to the "Lite" clamps. Hapstone has temporarily stopped making the regular "Lite" clamps but I hope they bring them back.

Hapstone had swivel-able clamps that aligned very well with rectangular stones and backed stones but people misunderstood how they worked, complained they were loose and stripped the screws in the swivels because they didn't understand the concept. Because of warranty returns and abuse due to misunderstood stone clamps and ill-educated YouTube "stars", Hapstone has now changed their stone holders to milled ones that doesn't swivel (similar to other sharpeners).

It really is a pity, but understandable because of all the unnecessary returns and complaints they received.

One way to help rectangular stones work well in regular stone clamps, would be to stick a strip of rubberized tape on the ends of the stones.

Also make sure to get the maximum spring tension you can by adjusting the stone clamps as small as possible.

Would it be possible to use the TSProf Improved Stone holders to replace the Hapstone that doesn't work so well with double sided stones?

Yes, it's possible. You'll just have to remove the Hapstone stone holders completely (including the circlip holding the rear stone holder in place) and then replace them with the TSProf improved stone holders.

This will only work with Blitz / Kadet / Pioneer improved stone holders, not with K03 stone holders.

Thanks 777. I was going to order an R2 and figured I bite the bullet and get a set of the Venev double sided stones but this thread made me a little hesitant since I'm sure it will come with the new one piece stone clamps. Since the horz. rod is ⌀6mm on both I thought they would but didn't want to order them only to find out there was some kind of issue.

No probs, yep they are both 6mm so the clamps do fit on the rod.

That said, as long as you increase the tension on the R2 stone clamps to make the spring as compressed as possible - the R2 clamps will still hold the Venev double sided stones without any major issues.
