Was wondering if anyone is crazy like me and thinks about getting double of tools that they like...1 for using and 1 spare incase the user breaks or disappears... I haven't done this yet except with my vic farmer... after I'm certain that I have my ideal set of tools I plan on doubling up....

I've done that in the past.

The only flaw I found is that many years later when the original wears out and you get the second one, there's been enough time past that improvements have been made and the new ones have better features, better engineering.

Sometimes.

Yea, I do this with many of my EDC items (I also have double Vic farmers, one for the pocket, one for the collection). I also have multiple mini survival kits (some contained in other survival kits). Most items I have doubled are fairly inexpensive, so they are easily doubled.

I can't even count how many mini-led pushlights I have. I could probably lose 10 and not notice :)

I'm with bladeNUT82 though, most of my duplicates are really cheap items where I'd rather be out an extra buck here and there than be out the item when I needed it.

I do it (think about it, that is) all the time. I do it occasionally, when the gear is cheap enough (like SAK's). Can't afford to do it with my more expensive kit. I did try it with flashlights, but as Jackknife pointed out, by the time you need the replacement, there's a much better version available. Especially with LED flashlights. Fortunately, they also make good gifts.

There is a more (to me) serious aspect to buying multiples of kit items. Not for spares as such, but just duplicates in other layers of kit, in the car, whatever. You are used to using them, and using the duplicate is therefore automatic. No new learning to be done or confusion becasue you are used to a dissimilar piece of kit..

I like to use that principle when I can in kits. Might save precious seconds or make things easier in a bad situation where you need to get the job done, not mess about with unfamilier kit. Probably a bit far fetched, but that's me.

I do it, too, but not with everything. Usually I duplicate items that I keep or intend to keep in the two car kits. That way, both kits are the same, or close to the same items.

The concept occurred to me one day while checking out one of the two ambulances at our fire department. Both ambos have the same compliment of gear. Why not do that with my stuff? Ding, ding, ding!

Aside from the car kits, unless I find something I really like that is at an affordable price point, I won't double up on purchases. But I recently found the discontinued Camillus Blaze at a decent price, and bought two of those. I did that more or less with Riley's frame of mind; use one, put the other away. I can se how that could become a sickness pretty easily. ;)

Yes,if I like a particular knife I often get at least one backup. You never know when a manufacturer is going to discontinue that model,or go out of business. I like to have backups even for guns, but that costs a bit too much..

I recently bought a Buck Alpha Dorado in 420HC that I liked so much, I bought another in 154CM. This is a little blade (2-1/2") that is very sturdy and even though it is people-friendly, it is quite capable of making fire boards, trap parts, etc.

There have been other things, as well, that I have multiples of. When you find something that just plain works well, you like to make sure you don't have to make do without it.

The idea of familiarity with an item, that has already been mentioned, also has merit.

I've bought a Cal.jr. somes months ago. Got a second one as a backup. Think to buy a third and will find a use for. Should to get a fourth if that knife production is discontinued...

dantzk.

Riley, I've long carried and used with complete satisfaction my old Victorinox Farmer, but I thought I'd never see another red Alox handle like it has/had. It's worn nearly white now, or at least "pink." Then recently somebody tipped us off that a short production run of the RED FARMERS was seen on that famous South American river. Fortunately, I saw that before they got slapped down for breaking a rule. I instantly ordered a pair of them and I'm delighted to have received them! :D :D :D

Hey Riley
It's not called crazy its called proper planing I do the same thing if I find a knife that really works for me, i'll double up If possible.I use one and keep the other as a back up. local gun shop had a fly now pay later sale a few years ago and picked up a matched pair of fixed blade knives one in carbon steel and the other stainless i've been able to try the carbon vs stainless first hand

I think having a backup (or three) of a favorite knife is a sound idea.
I tend to do that with SAK's. I have multiples of these Vics Huntsman/Recruit/Spartan/Tourist/Waiter/Pioneer/Classic/Compact/Alox Lumberjack.
Some like the Huntsmans/Lumberjacks/Pioneers/Compacts i deliberately bought duplicates of, the rest are the fringe benefit of buying SAK lots on ebay!
I definitely need to pick up some extra OH Trekkers and Swisschamps too!
The only fixed blades i have multiples of are my two Western w49 Bowies and two old Bench Mark Ninjas.
The Ninjas aren't as "shopping mall ninja"-ish as they sound! lol!
They have a 4 inch spear-point blade with a 4 inch zytel (?) handle. Very flat but with decent steel and a 3/16's thick blade.
I bought them back in the early to mid 90's, after i bought the Blackie Collins "Knife Throwing..Sport..Survival..Defense" book. (They are featured in the book)
They are actually decent utilitarian small knives and they throw pretty good.

I love how that is worded. Being in Canada I can't order from that particular river for non-book items. Thankfully I was able to get one from a certain Cat Doctor for a slightly higher price. Word has it that Fridays are a good time to look on that river for Farmers from a certain Forest as they come with an LED light in a gift tin (again not for Canadians).

yep of every tool i turely like cause they awalys quit making them of change the formula to something more generick so they can lower cost in most cases

I emailed them (the .ca version) about that

heres their reply
"Thank you for writing to us at (that river named place) .ca.

Please note that we do not have the same inventory or supply as the
(that river named place).com website.

We expect our Canadian web site to expand and improve the selection
of products and services we provide, but we have no further details
to give you at this time regarding our plans for Victorinox Swiss Army
knives.

However, I have passed your message along to the appropriate people
in our company for their consideration.

We hope you enjoy our current offerings, and encourage you to check
back on our web site often.

Thank you for your interest in (that river named place).ca."

Hint hint...
Maybe if enough Canucks request it (that river named place) .ca may decide to start selling Vic knives and other knives etc.

What I do is use a knife or tool until it is well used and done it's share of work, and if I like it enough retired it before it is completly worn out and get another one like it to use.Kinda dumb but...

Nah, I like to have variety. I do tend to get tools and knives that could stand in for each other, even if they are not identical. For example, I have far more multi tools than a normal person might need.

Doubling up on a tool, a knife or whatever, that you find works for you is just
plain common sense. My problem is that I tend to get carried away with doubling up on a lot of expensive knives and wilderness survival toys.
I have to start selling off some of the goodies that I don't use.
