Doubts About Youtube Survival Guys

Its a pain in the butt to lug the tripod and the camera far into the parks. I have done it, but man do I want a more portable tripod (have gorillapod too). Even out in the boonies, a low flying plane following the river behind you can throw the hole damn video off. Sometimes things were just going so well it would be hard o replicate the task at hand so u just live with the cut. This weekend while doing a vid....geese were the problem.

I've watched a fair few videos on youtube and as with any information source you just have to decide what you want to learn from and what you want to discard.

A guy in his garage doing a great demonstration of the bowdrill with a clear description of what he's using and doing far beats some guy half way to nowhere rubbing sticks together in a futile effort to make fire.

I just watch most vids once, if it's got something of merit in it I favorite it if not I move on.

I will agree on the kit stuff though. I always wear decent/appropriate clothing and have a few essentials on me. Yes I do carry far more steel into the woods than I need but hey that's where the fun comes into for me. As for fire well lets just say I carry enough means of getting a fire going to bedazzle a continent of stoneage men and chimps alike.

I can't imagine finding myself in some of the situations these guys dream up but hey it's the internet. I often see vids of situations or positions I could not dream of getting into................

Ummmm Yeah I hate those Jerks

especially that bushcraftbums loser...who does he think he is flaunting his boyish good looks and charm about like that...My wife watches youtube for crying out loud.

The honest truth is that the Bushcraft Bums guy has ZERO talent and only is able to make a decent movie because of the actor that does all the stunts!

He just sits back - talks - while the stunt actor takes all of the chances and shows us how traps work and the like.

Who does he think he is? Marlin Perkins?

I'll keep it short and sweet. We encourage "backyard training" because it is safe. The point is, at least you ARE DOING and not just watching.

Secondly, cameras only show you some of the whole picture.

Yeah... damn geese. :p

Who's gonna take all of their electronics and camera gear and help with them all the way out where they hike just to show a 10 min. skills video? I wouldn't, especialy if there is a woodspatch close by that I could show the same thing from. When I hike I like to go as light as safely as is possible.

In all seriousness... If you want authentic training in a real setting take a survival course there is really no substitute... I could watch all the martial arts videos n the world but it is no substitute fro training at a good school. I make videos mostly because I enjoy it... I make no claims at being an expert because I am certainly not...I live in an urban setting so I film what I can when I can... I do get out to the woods to play every week, and get out for multi day trips pretty frequently..but when I'm really out I'm soaking up the goodness not making videos....despite my novice abilities I have several hundred pretty friendly fans.. so I can;t complain... but there are some guys on youtube with real abilities showing good stuff... but there are also a bunch of tools as well..(I admittedly fall more towards the tool side) so like anything glean what you can from it.. and if you can do better.. than knock it out of the park man...I'd love to see some new vids out there....

ummmm, for many of us that IS REALITY.

LOL, Yea I know, just havin some fun with this.
Seriously tho I have watched a Bunch of youtube vids and its like everything else, there is good stuff and there is crap. It doesn't take much skill to know the difference. I have learned a few things and more than anything else gotten ideas for all kinds of stuff. I would never have thought of inventing an alcohol stove from a couple beer cans, but after seeing a few vids I whipped one out in 10 minutes and surprisingly it worked like a champ!
I just got back into backpacking this year and web research has helped me a lot in determing what gear to take and that sortof thing, the new materials technology has done amazing things. I love camping and I like to be somewhat comfortable about it. So taking things to do that and keeping the pack weight down is the challenge.
Getting away from traffic and all that IS tough for a lot of guys including me, its at least an hour drive somewhere to have a walkabout where there is very little chance of hearing a car, but its well worth the drive.

Besides all that, that beer cooler is HEAVY, waiting on some clever soul to invent freeze dried Guiness! Nothing like 2 or 3 at the end of a long day.

Personally, I think it is a by-product of the wonderfull age we live in. I can remember when you had to go to the library if you wanted information on a subject. Now, you can click a few websites and have that info at your fingertips.
The downside is the fact that there is a ton of info that isnt correct. But who cares. Thats where wisdom comes into play.

Good point Milani...also just because something is in a book does not mean it is Nec. Valid.. I have 1 book inparticular which is full of poor examples of bush skill..although in other areas it is quite informative..

Personally, I'm not a big fan of videos. The medium is just too linear and slow. I prefer text and pictures because I can read much faster and or choose to skim things without loosing the importance or relevance of what was missed.

Now videos certainly far excel in certain types of demonstrations. There are just times when a picture won't cut it. My favorite things are when folks build a website with text and pictures on a topic and then substitute a short (<30 s) clip about an activity where video demonstrates it best, but you don't have to spend all your time listening to an intro.

All the above sounds kind of whiny, but for me that is my preferred way to soak up information. This is mainly why I chose to hang around BF rather than surfing youtube. Literally, the only time I ever watch a video over there is because it was posted over here.

Then again, none of why a video is put up there is about me. Most times its about the poster. What are their motivations for posting? Who are they trying to reach and why are they trying to reach other people? For some, the answers can be quite noble and others.....we'll less so.

I grew up in a time before the internet. I sometimes pontificate on the fact that aside from television, almost all of the written information that was presented to me came through some sort of peer review filter. Whether that was the newspaper or magazines that go through an editorial board, or books at the library who had publishers doing edits and then later the librarian themselves selecting which books were appropriate to go into which sections of the library. I grew up in a time where you were taught to trust writing with the exception of comic books and distrust television and movies. Those lines get blurred a great deal today.

The internet can be a source of credible information and absolute bull*hit macerating as such. Look at 'The Naturist' that we all had a laugh watching. It is really just another commercial for a hiking shoe trying to go exponential on the new medium that is advertising today - the internet. They irony is that they are spoofing survival while at the same time trying to sell hiking shoes. Personally, I don't get the philosophy behind it it but, but it most work?

Well - just like one of the 59 minute videos talking about how itchy a mosquito bite can be, I managed to steal 30 second of your time with my musings. What was the topic again? :D

KGD,

Time for you to read "Amusing Ourselves to Death" by Neal Postman if you have not.

You were quoting him basically.

In walmart the other day and saw a survival skils type book and it touted in detail the value of a ground solar still (useless). If I see that in one more book with ripped off pictures and plagerized material I will loose my mind.

Practicing at home is great to get some basics down but the world is not our back yards, to truly gain knowledge you MUST venture into your area of operation under various conditions and experience it.
