Doug Ritter Grip

Its late May, are these available yet? An S30V Griptillian would be awesome.

I'm anxiously awaiting a review of these sweeties.
How's it stack up to the D2 or 440c?
I have both in a couple configurations and think they are swell. The mini and reg grip.

The high cost of Ritter's is worth it to help keep the site up :)

I got confirmation that mine shipped, should be here today or tomorrow :D

I got mine yesterday, overall a solid knife.
It might be one of the best folder that I have, at any price.

Mine finally arrived. I haven't used it much yet, but it still made a good first impression. First, the blade to handle ratio is excellent. They fit a 3.5" blade in a handle just over 4", very cool. The blade is shaped almost exactly like the Sebenza's, which is an awesome blade shape. Nice and pointy, with a nice sweep, and RAZOR sharp, literally. It's also light, disapeers in my pocket. I have a few other Benchmades that have the Axis lock, and it is a really strong lock. It feels like a fixed blade when it's locked open. The handle is thick nylon, with stubby knurling on it. Good grip without being too sharp or agressive. I have been really impressed with S30V steel. It stays sharp forever, but doesn't seem too hard to sharpen when it finally starts to drag. I will take it out an really use it this weekend, but so far I really like this knife. It may even ride with me as often as expensive custom folders I usually carry. Doug and Benchmade did a great job!

Mine is in my backpack. Solid knife, great blade shape, typical Benchmade quality. IMO, the S30V steel is worth the extra bucks over the same knife in 440C.

Well, I don't pretend to be a knife reviewer, so don't expect a review!

I received my RSK in the mail today, and here are my initial impressions:
I really like the deep chord of the blade. Wider blades seem to be becoming my favorites, lately. The blade finish is very appealing, as well. The stonewash doesn't show fingerprints like a high polish would. We'll have to wait and see how it holds up with use.
Having a little trouble with the Axis lock. Probably just needs to break in a bit, before being smooth.
The one thing I don't like is the handle material. Don't get me wrong, it is plenty "grippy," but it feels and sounds like "cheap, hard plastic." Personally, I prefer micarta or G10. I'd also prefer full-size liners and a little more heft to the handle, but that's just me.
Ignoring my personal issues with the handle, it seems to be a solid piece of work. I've added it to me EDC rotation, so time will tell. Who knows, I might even get to like noisy, hollow sounding plastic handles

MP, What sort of problem with the Axis lock?
I have several, many, a bunch, :) axis and never had a sticky or balky one.

You won't ever love the plasticy handles but you may gain an appreciation of them after some rough use.
I have a few Grips and hate the handles but they have stood the test of time...for me at least... I do like them better than the dadblamed alum on the 350's. Now that's some cheap feelin stuff.
Hahaha

Tom,
The problem with the Axis is the thumb stud. It grates and grinds when I pull it back to open or close the knife. I've resorted to a two finger (left hand) push on both sides of the lock to close it. Quite unhandy. I'll try cleaning it up and putting some lube on it and see if that helps.

MP, that's not a good start with a fine knife. I think by "thumbstud" you mean the axis mechanism.
While there can be and are problems with a specific piece...It sucks that the problem piece is yours.
You can only hope that this is the worst that happens in life for this year :)

I've spoken with and sent Angie some blades for touchup/refurb.
She's a delight and I got the stuff back within a week of Benchmade getting it. That's coast to coast travel.
(Angie is the Goddess at Benchmade service)
I'd recommend, if it's not some pocket lint or something real dopey, to send it in for them to check out. It's not something dopey. It can be a fitting problem.
Keep us apprised of what happens when you clean and lube it. Careful with lubing as you don't want an oil to attract more dirt on the spring and ball of the axis.
Hmmmmm....There's a lube product for bicycles that is a dirt antimagnet..White Lightning??? Maybe.

Best luck
Tom

Tom,
Yes, when I said "thumbstud" I was refering to the Axis mechanism.
When I pull back on one side of the Axis bar, I can see it the Axis bar cock sideways as it is drawn back. Seems like maybe the knobs on each side of the locking bar aren't tight enough, and that slop is causing it to bind.
I cleaned out the mechanism real good and applied some "Prolong" lube to it. Probably not the best, but it seemed like the thing to do at the time. No improvement.
Guess I'll give Angie a call and see if she has any insights.

Oh, and thanks for the tip!

I have the same "problem" with mine. I thought this was normal as it is difficult for me to pull the bar back with only one finger so I trained myself to use both sides of the locking bar. To be honest, it is way smoother and way easier to use both sides, so I won't be sending mine back. Took a bit of practice though. Perhaps if you practice, you will like it better this way too?

One way to overcome the grittiness is to use two finger but yuou could also press a bit with one finger to flatten the lockbar to the liner. Dont belittle the plastic handles, if you look inside the blade slot you will see that there are 410 ss liners on both side of the handle. Also the construction of the grip is way quality. Look at the inset ss pieces for the clip screws.

Now that the Rittergrip is out and reviewed, guess thats gonna make my wallet lighter....
