Douk Douk Nirvana

worldknives.com has the K55K Black Cat. I am not sure if its old stock as I have read they are being made by Otter of Germany now. I am going to wait for waynorth's review before I get another Cat. The Cat I have now appears to be improperly heat treated. Bought it about 15 years ago. It is a great slim knife for pocket carry.

It kinda looks like waynorth went way South on his promised review! Nevermind... The Douk Douk will outcut a lot of knives both Production & Custom...The Black Cat K55K can't hold up to the DUKE er Douk Douk!!!!

Yep... waynorth went waysouth on his promissed review! Why... I will tell ya all why.. because the Black Cat can't hold a candle to the DUKE..Douk Douk that is & he knows it!

WOW Pogo! It's only been 6 days since he said he'd get back to us. Are you this impatient all the time?

True knife reviews take time and patience. I'd like this to be a real world test, so I'm carrying them each a couple days at a time. But I just got this beautiful knife from Oupa that leaps into my hand first all the time!!
This will take a while. Patience Grasshopper!

Are you trying to tell me that one of Oupa's knives is superior to the almighty DOUK-DOUK ?!?!?

:D

Esav, how can I put this so I don't offend the Dukes of Douk Douk??
If I offered to trade you this

For this,

would you give up your Douk Douk???

I would hate to part with one of my Douk-Douks!
But out of respect for my good friend Dirk, well -- OK! :D

Beautiful. Is that rehandled in ebony?

Yes, ebony, with a silver shield. The "frame" is one half of a Queen/Scagel (obviously).
His Oupafied knives are wonderful to carry. You don't have to protect them like a newborn child; you can look fondly at them and take real pleasure in using them! Practical art!
They don't cost a week's pay, maybe a day's or so! The sweet spot of special yet traditional EDCs!!

That knife from Oupa is a beauty! Ok... I will be patient. Thanks for the great Oupa pic!

Esav, be careful of what you say...you will hurt my feelings! :D

If you do db, ask him to put some pants on it!!

Thanks guys. I now have a small Douk Douk and a small Higonokami on the way. They've been on my list for a while.

Finally, I'm ready to put in my two cents worth. I really wanted to use these knives in every day situations to give them a fair shake. I hope you all don't mind my abbreviations for this test report.
They are utility knives, in my opinion. As others have said, they are for cutting and scraping rough or nasty stuff, to save your pocket treasures or "jewelry" from serious degrading.
They both cut up cardboard, open taped up packages etc. although the thickness of the Douk's blade slows its progress through cardboard some. The Merc is better at it.
I used the Douk to carefully scrape some rust off an antique H.S.& B. Harness Jack I acquired. Because the Douk's steel is softer, it worked well not scratching the older blade deeply! It sharpens easily, and holds it's edge moderately well, almost as well as the Merc.
The part I don't like much is the ergonomics of either. The Douk is like having a porcupine for a pet! It is uncomfortable to handle! If you grip it hard, the handle cuts into your fingers. It's all barbs; the back corner of the tang sticks up when it's closed and in your pocket, and the back edge of the blade is sharp. Mine, even after some use and oiling is still too tight to open and close smoothly. The Merc is a little better in the hand and pocket, having a more sunk joint, and smoother sheet metal edges at the handles to ease a tight grip. And for tough work, a lockback has its advantages.
Some of my complaints can be fixed or improved somewhat, but as a pocket or EDC knife, there are a lot better choices out there. Rattling around in the trunk or a toolbox, I can see either of these, but give me a nice grip, better steel and blade profile for my pocket!

Hmmm..interesting review. The back of my Douk is not sharp & it opens & closes smoothly. Seems like you got a tight one. The handle does not dig into my fingers enough to cause discomfort when gripped hard but, I see what you mean here. The Black Cat I have will not outcut the Douk on cardboard or tough to cut polyprpelene rope. My Black Cat could have a lower heat treat as it will not take a razor edge like my Douk. The Duke of Douk Douk has spoken!

Having the knives in question, I can toss some combustable fluid into the mix. I like both the K55 and the Douk-Douk, as they are the european style peasents knives I have a weakness for.

But, niether will out cut any of my Opinels. Of my Douk-Douk, Mercator, Okapi, Opinel, Kissing Krane sodbusters, the Opinel is the top cutter with the carbon brown mules nipping at the french rear.

But the Douk is just so damm interesting!

Well said Jacknife! The ones you listed including the Douk are all fine inexpensive using knives for sure. I know that everyone has their opinions about any knife made & I do respect their opinions even if they are different from mine.

The Douk Douk rules! After trying the Black Cat K55 VS the Douk Douk...I can honestly say there is a difference in cutting ability. The Cat digs into your hand as well but, not enough to cause discomfort & neither does the Douk Douk! The Douk Douk easily outcuts the Black Cat! The Duke of Douk Douk has spoken!
