I'm starting to collect the cheap 'peasant' knives of various countries. You know, like the Douk-Douk, Higonokami, Opinel, etc.

What else is there? (I recognize the Svord Peasant isn't a design native to New Zealand, but it sort of fits into the theme.)

Many thanks.

Okapi, not the Cold Steel tribute but the real ones, beloved by South African youngsters and gangsters alike.

A challenge would be finding one of the older, German made ones.

Here are a few brands/pattern that's regional/country specific, not all of them are 'peasant' knife per se, but still collectable if you are interested:

Corta-E-Pica, Portugal
Hippekniep/Sodbuster, Boker/Mercator, Solingen, Germany
Karambit, Golok, Keris, Indonesia
Navaja, Spain
Okapi, South Africa
Opinel/Laguiole/Douk-Douk, Le Thiers, France
Rybička/Fish knife, Mikov, Czech Republic
Szankovitis, Hungary
Svord, New Zealand
Victorinox, Switzerland

Mora!

I can see J jackknife influence in this thread already, in the Christy and Pattada suggestions.

Okay, I have to plead guilty on that! I do have a love oddball old fashioned knives like the Pattada and Christy, not to mention the Higonokami, Opinel, taramundi, and other primitive friction folders.

But the little Christy has a special place in my heart, both from my dad and my own experience with it.

Be veeeery careful, leozinho! They can be very addicting, and there is a very clear danger that once you get used to how an Oinel, Douk-Douk, and Higonokami slice and dice, you become spoiled with the almost sensual way they glide through what your cutting.

Very true, started with an Opinel carbon 7 and now I have a 6, three 7, two 8, 9, 10, and 12.

José Da Cruz Cutelaria (from Portugal) has some nice Opinel-like folders.

Fraraccio from Italy, for some nice italian knife patterns.

Mikov, from Czech Republic.

Do yourself a huge favor; don't try a Douk-Douk!

It will spoil you by slicing with an Opinel, but without the fussy finicky wood handle that needs treating and tinkering.

Otter Messer! Pick any one you like the looks of. I highly recommend their Ankermesser and Three Rivet Knife.

Also A. Wright & Sons in Sheffield. They have hit or miss quality, but when you get a good one they really shine.

Bad news, already have a large and small Douk Douk 😅
Been looking to pick up some of the other variants like the vendetta and tiki with a black blade though......

mora / morakniv from sweden since 1891... my personal fav for low cost, high quality blades...

I'm just sad they dropped some of their wood handled models :(

Portugise MAM.
I have the large Sheepsfoot, without linerlock.
They also make a large and small spearpoint and a small Sheepsfoot, with or without a linerlock.
Personally, I like the friction folders without the linerlock. They seem more "traditional"/"original".

I don't know if you are aware, but only the Opinel Number 6 and above have the ring lock (introded/added in 1955).
The number 2 to 5 inclusive don't have a lock.

Good luck finding an African manufactured Okapi. They might be out of business. :(

EDIT:
A Mora Number 1 or 2 or other brand Puukko, if you are including fixed blades in your collection,
You might have to get one "second hand" ... I think the Mora "Classics" are miniatures or sized for pre-teen hands.
