So, yesterday my Brother and his family came out for a visit. My sister in law (brothers wife .age around early 30's) as soon as she got here she went straight to the vegetable garden to poke around and see what we have growing.

Five minutes later she comes in to the house saying "I NEED A KNIFE" and she goes over to our knife block in the kitchen and pulls out the biggest one, a 8' fully serrated knife, and as she is walking out the door she holds the knife out in front of her and says "IM GOING TO HARVEST" to my dad. she then goes and starts looking for some of our big zucchini to cut. She finds a few then moves on to our beans we have growing. When she did this she put the knife down by stabbing it in to the ground and left it there......(my brother and his wife and his family all leave and go home).....

Today i'm cleaning up the kitchen after dinner and i notice that the big knife is not around ,so i ask my mom she sais she hadn't seen it since yesterday and we get talking and we decide to call my sister in law and inquire. we phone and ask and she says " i put it down and when i went to get it i couldn't find it".?!?!?!

losing it is one thing ,stuff happens but why would you just leave it and not tell some one and let them know there is a huge knife missing in or around your garden?!?!?!!? It took us phoning her to ask for her to say something ....its not even a high end knife but still its dangerous and irresponsible.

continued in next post ..

Well, that wasn't very smart on her part, now was it?
Maybe she shouldn't be handling sharp objects..........or a car

FYI, it's "says", not "sais"

Classic ID Ten T error.

Tell her to keep her hands off of your knives.

Glad you found the knife without someone getting cut.

best

She probably can't be trusted with any gardening tools either! Lucky you noticed the knife missing so you did not slice yourself pulling weeds

Yes. Be careful with your knives.

Also especially when throwing knives. Don't let them ricochet.

Btw if that was me and someone left my gi tanto out in the garden I'd have sued :p love that knife. Luckily it's cheap so easy replacement.

Excuse me, I hav a question.

Did she even ask permission to go "harvesting" in your garden before she starts cutting off what you all have put labor into growing? Even before the knife issue, this seems like an extremely rude person who needs a bit of education in "Don't touch our stuff unless invited" kind of thing. I don't think I'd have been polite or diplomatic about it either.

I'm glad you found it before the end of the season when most of us clean the garden up for winter. It would probably have been pretty much ruined in a couple months stuck in the ground.

I would tell her to bring her own knife next time.

i don't know what was said between my parents and my sister-in-law as to harvesting our garden..idk.

she is most definitely going to get chirped for this one for a while.

That's a good idea next time ill tell her that "bring your own knife"

Or just fence in the garden or shroud it a bit I guess. I would keep the knifes in a drawer or cabinet when guests visit.

There is a reason for "keep out of reach of children [and irresponsible adults....]" :p

You should grow some Carolina Reapers, and then let her harvest them. Ask her if they taste good. (This will probably get her to bite into it.) Problem solved permanently. :)

Haha, I should do that. I take it that they're able to be grown in NC, considering the name.

If you have any common sense regarding safety, then you notice poor examples of it daily. You just can't believe the things people will do with a deadly weapon, and yes, all knives are potential weapons... get over the tool vs weapon crap. Sadly, I truly believe most simply don't know better. 1 evening in Boy Scouts learning knife safety, and I've never forgotten it. My wife knows it as well as I do, and my son, when he can have a knife, will be drilled about knife responsibility.
Neighbor kids that like to hang out at our place that are a bit older than my six year old get schooled by my six year old when they brag about goofing around with knives. That's my boy! Of course I have tried to teach them the proper way to handle knives, and told them if they ever do anything stupid with a knife at or near my house, that I'll cut their knife into pieces in front of them. They know I mean it, but love to talk knife safety and love to watch me sharpen their knives for them. Too bad nobody at home teaches these kids.

who on tv or cinema started the practice of jamming a knife to the ground, or some wooden object, after the cutting was done? totally irresponsible. BF'ers aren't helping the general public much, what with so many pictures of knives jammed into tree trunks and fence posts.

She should have used garden shears anyway, or at least a non serrated knife. What would she have done if one of her kids cut themselves on it.

Sounds like she chose not to think about a single one of her actions
