Hey guys Im completely new to this whole knife collecting thing. I have always been interested in knives but have only really purchased 2 worth mentioning. I bought a SOG tech II (EDM, WA) about 20 years ago and then a Shun Premier santoku lol, about 3 years ago. My brother bought a Knives of Alaska Blaze about 2 year ago and I wanted an EDC ever since. So I did like most newbs and googled "Best EDC Knife". The Benchmade 940 came up a couple times. Decided to go to a Cabelas and Wholesale Sports to check them out. One guy told me to check out the 940-1 online. So I did and ordered it. So I havent even taken delivery of it yet and Im looking for my NEXT ONE already.

What are some recommendations for a step up from the BM 940-1 for an EDC. Looking for roughly the same size and weight. Also dont want to go over $500 just yet. Will mostly be a pocket queen I guess with super light to light use.

So here I go guys any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

With your usage in mind, I would look at a Chris Reeve Mnandi, William Henry, or custom from the exchange on here.

Hell, I would suggest holding out for a few om knives, buy some sharpening equipment and some other edc knives of a lower pocket hit and become familiar with sharpening, reprofiling, and see how you take to the ownership and care for knives.

Then once you see what you like and dislike, you should move ahead on purchases.
For example:
Do you prefer a thumb stud, spydiehole, or nail knick?
What about a liner lock, lock back, frame lock or a slip joint?
Do you want a dedicated EDC knife that yu won't mind if it gets dinged when dropped and a separate knife for dinners and events?
What about fancied up custom fixed blades (smaller blades and slim Abalone slabs for handle material)?

There is a bunch to learn, and a lot of directions to go.
Take your time and get your feet wet prior to testing the depth with both feet.

Edit to add:
I would suggest that you watch the Chris Reeve exchange for a Mnandi that has a sentimental date (child's birthdate, anniversary date, et al), and jump on that as soon as you can.

I saw my daughters birthdate pop up on a large 21 sebenza and I was the first of 5+ to commit to it. I immediately had 3 emails and two PMs asking to purchase it from me. To this day (almost 2 years later) I have yet to see the date pop up again, only 7 were made that day.

My current favorite EDC's right now are my Ferrum Forge Archbishop, and my Jeremy Robertson El Patron. I have quite a bit more knives then them, but right now, they are my favorite EDC's. Just one of the many in my rotation. Both of them I found for under $500, El Patron on the secondary market, but in perfect shape. Very well made knives!!!

With some hunting you may be able to find a Shirogorov Neon or Neon Lite for $500. Hard to beat.

I'd suggest spending some time with the 940 first though. If you order something too soon you may not be able to really appreciate the 940 for want of the new purchase. Give it time to set in before moving on something else.

Completely agreed ^

Definitely recommend giving the 940 some pocket time, see how you like it. Get a good idea of your size preferences - you may prefer a different size/weight altogether since you've only checked it out online. Maybe it's not your cup of tea or maybe you love it and want to get something similar as your next purchase (as opposed to a "step up")...always best not to be hasty. It's difficult to judge these things just from online pictures and other people's reviews. You never really know until you've had it for awhile.

Yep enjoy the 940 for a while, it ruined a lot of my favorite edcs for me.... really hard to find a better all around edc for under $500

Agree with those above - carry the 940 for awhile to get a better idea of what you'd like and dislike in the next one.
