Hi Guys,
You may have seen Downeast Knife Company is a new venture Lamont Coombs and I are working on together. Our prototype has come a long way in just a few days. We've met and/or talked with alot of great folks.
Here's where we stand on our original run of 25 serial numbered knives:
Thanks to all who are helping us make this happen, including Paul Rohaly, of Rohaly Cutlery, for helping us with the CAD files necessary in making this possible. We plan to start taking orders for the first knives in a day or two. Please, let us know what you think!
Thank you,
Scott
You may have seen Downeast Knife Company is a new venture Lamont Coombs and I are working on together. Our prototype has come a long way in just a few days. We've met and/or talked with alot of great folks.
Here's where we stand on our original run of 25 serial numbered knives:
- All of the raw materials have been specified and ordered. D2 steel, with canvas Micarta, or orange G-10 for the grips.
- We've secured the services of Great Lakes Waterjet to profile our blades. Dave is a great guy, and we're excited to be working with him!
- Lamont and I will grind and finish machine the blades, and make the handle attachment hardware (these are replaceable/removeable grips).
- Paul Bos will do the heat treating. (What else can I say about that.)
- Precision Tool Grinding & Machine will rough out the grips on their CNC machine. Bill and the boys were all over it yesterday.
- Lamont and I will do the finish machining/shaping of the grips.
- West Branch Traders will perform the laser etching, if requested. Very, very cool! Paul is outstanding to work with and his available clipart is limitless. Customer's can even provide their own!
- I will make the kydex sheaths. Each knife will fit securly with a "snap", but won't be too tight. The mouths are elongated (fishmouthed) and a launching point provided to help with the draw.
- Chris Kravitt of Treestump Leather will make the leather sheaths. Chris's work is exceptional and known all over. I just delivered the first prototype knife to him this morning.
- Lamont and I will apply the desired finish/coating to the blades, assemble the knife, sharpen it until it is "scary sharp", mate it with the proper sheath, and send it off to its new home.
- Last but certainly not least, our good friend Shawn (shaman) is working very hard to finish our web page www.downeastknife.com . He is doing an outstanding job both in creating the web page, and in offering us alot of pointers and advice. I'll be the first to admit it, I'm not a natural salesman. Shawn is full of great, practical ideas.
