Dozier KS-1

Looks great. I really started looking at his blades from your review and the ad in Backwoodsman. Seems like a great blade.

I'm starting to like the looks of the K-17 White River Skinner.

After little use:

1. After I cut out leather handle aroung full tang on Spyderco Mule and edge hit CPM M4 tang several times, I found that edge rather bend then chip, unlike ZDP-189 and CPMs.

2. I cut out about yard long 1/8"x1/3" leather strip for lanyard for ZT302 (after resharpening back to hair whittling) - what a pleasant experience - it did not require any effort! Dozier KS1 went through thick leather like it is nothing. Feels like no any push from me, it just did it by itself.

Thanks, Vassili.

Nice review... my K-1 General Utility, with jigged bone handle, has become my preferred FB. Holds a superb edge, like your KS-1.

Can you see bulat/wootz pattern on the side of your blade as well?

Thanks, Vassili.

It actually shows pretty good results! It did not outperform SR101 but left all other behind! I guess Bob Dozeir gave Japanese KaBar partners some hints how to Heat Treat D2. This one listed as 60-61HRC.

Thanks, Vassili.

Nozh, are you saying the Ka-Bar Dozier outperformed CPM-M4? If I understand you correctly, these cutting tests were done on manila rope? Very interesting and thank you.

Results are almost same see for yourself may be little behind:

But again it is limited to 200 1/2" Manila rope cuts from hair whittling sharpness. I am not testing any other properties. From other hand - if that Japanese manufacturer follow some Dozier instruction and make it close to what Dozier do - no surprise.

Thanks, Vassili.

Cliff Stamp broke a Dozier while whittling out a wooden bowl or spoon I think. The tip broke away. While this is certainly not a destruction test, it would seem to indicate that this one particular Dozier was somewhat brittle. I own two Doziers myself right now, including one just like Vassilli's, and I have owned several others over the years. I've never had a problem with them myself, no breakage. All have been extremely sharp to start with and they tend to stay that way. While I prefer flat grinds over hollow grinds, in practice my Doziers have worked just fine. My own personal test of a knife is how well it performs with barbecue spare ribs. I have a side business cooking barbecue and I go through a lot of spare rib slabs. Each slab has to be cut into individual ribs which means I hit bones all the time. Of all the knives I've tried over the years, the Doziers held their edge as good as or better than any of the others, which means they needed to be touched with a ceramic rod every so often to keep them going full speed through the ribs.

I snapped the tip off my Dozier Delta Traveller while trying to split some pitch pine. I thought I was being fairly gentle, but I think I got it a little off center. I finished the job with a Busse Active Duty no problem. I used this same Dozier to butcher a 240 lb hog the week before, no problem. I think that the high hollow grind is best for hunting, but a flat grind for wood working. I think the breakage was more a function of geometry rather than steel or brittleness. I have a flat ground Dozier that would probably do just as well at that kind of a task as the Busse. I just didn't have it with me at the time.

I re-ground the tip (carefully) on my belt sander in about 10 min. If you didn't know what a Delta Traveller was supposed to look like, you'd never even know that it lost about 1/4 inch off the tip. I still use and love this knife. Due to the regrind, the tip is a little thicker and probably a little stronger, but I'm more careful with it now.

After butchering the hog, I re-tried the edge. You couldn't even tell the knife was used, it was just as sharp as when I started. Love them Doziers.

Today I cut computer paper 9.5" long and 2" thick (stack). I consider it a heavy load for any edge and before - I had to resharpen knife after this kind of job.

I did it with my KS-1 this time. To my surprize I did not notice any difference while cutting. I try to shave - and I was able shave my arm clean, not like few hairs here and there but all like with good razor! This is unbelievable! Dozier gets more and more credit while I use it more.

Thanks, Vassili.

Not to mention his fit and finish are pretty much as good as I've ever seen. I think he could easily charge double for his knives, from a comparative basis. But don't tell him! :D
